GEORGE HYDE powered his way to a podium place for the second time in as many weeks.

The talented West Cheshire Athletic Club thrower pocketed a bronze medal in the under 20 men’s shot put at the England Athletics Indoor Championships held in Sheffield with a club record distance of 15.87m.

Hyde also bagged a bronze medal with a put of 15.23m the week before when he represented Loughborough University at the British Universities and Colleges Indoor Championships at Sheffield. 

Hyde was joined in Sheffield at the weekend by West Cheshire AC members Ruby Wisbey and Maddi Mercer. 

Wisbey achieved a new under 15 girls 60m hurdles personal best time of 9.42 seconds, long-jumped 4.83m, and posted 8.34 seconds in her 60m heat, while Mercer clocked 8.38 seconds in her 60m heat.

JOSEPH MORRISON represented West Cheshire Athletic Club at the British Indoor Championships at Glasgow and posted a time of 1:51:07 for third spot in his 800m heat.

LUKE PARKER produced a top-20 finish at the English National Cross Country Championships.

The youngster battled his way around the tough wet and muddy 3km course at Nottingham’s Wollaton Park for 13th position in the under 13 boys race with a time of 15:09, supported by West Cheshire AC team mates Reece Munro (144th in 16:52), and Daniel Walker (225th in 17:38).

Carys Roberts achieved 23rd position with a time of 20:16 in the 4km under 15 girls race, while Lily Moorhouse was 120th with 36:47 in the 6km under 20 women’s race.

Jessica Lark clocked 17:23 for 91st position in the 3km under 13 girls race, backed up by Sophie Haslam (105th in 17:36), Ruby Phillips (169th in 18:23), Aimee Phillips (201st in 18:52), and Ruby Carlile (276th in 19:56) to earn 15th team position.

Sion Roberts clocked 42:25 for 94th spot in the 10km under 20 men’s race, backed up by Jac Goodall (161st in 47:06), and Rory Willson (189th in 51:35).

Sammy Hollins posted 19:08 for 126th position in the 4km under 15 boys race, while Will Wright was 176th with 27:17 in the 6km under 17 men’s race.

Dave Alexander rounded the 12km senior men’s race for 598th spot in 56:09, supported by Andrew Clague (823rd in 59:49), Andy Carter (1084th in 63:53), and Jon Moorhouse (1662nd in 83:23).

NEIL HERSHAW was first over-55 man in a time of 66:22 at the Rhyl 10 Miles Road Race, ahead of West Cheshire AC team mates Cathryn Whalley (fifth over-50 lady in 88:17), and Isabel Robertson (sixth over-55 lady in 94:49). 

MEGAN WHITE and Sara Pearson posted new personal bests at the Sale Harriers Indoor Open Meeting.

White rounded the under 15 girls 600m in 1:52:48, and West Cheshire AC team mate Pearson hit a new under 15 girls shot put best of 9.61m, as well as adding a 4.44m long jump, and 1:57.19 for 600m.

Other West Cheshire AC members in action included Fergus Garland who posted 25.47 seconds for his under 15 boys 200m and Uzezi Onomerike who clocked 1:58:37 for his 600m.

FIXTURES this weekend include the Marches School 10k Race at Oswestry on Sunday (9am start); the Trafford 10k Road Race at Partington Leisure Centre, on Sunday (9.30am start), and the Cloud Nine Hill Race at Congleton on Sunday (11am start).

JOSEPH MORRISON and George Hyde delivered podium performances at the British Universities and Colleges Indoor Athletics Championships.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club members both impressed during the three-day fixture held at the English Institute of Sport Arena, in Sheffield.

Morrison, representing the University of Chester, clocked a new personal best time of one minute 50.67 seconds to pocket a bronze medal in the 800m final.

He also smashed the club indoor and outright 800m record, having bettered the record 24 hours earlier in his semi-final, and he achieved the qualifying time for the British Athletics Championships being held at Manchester in June.

Hyde, representing Loughborough University, powered his way to a bronze medal in the shot put with a new Under 20 men’s club record of 15.23m.

Beth McMahon, representing Sheffield University, clocked a new 400m personal best of 62.05 seconds, while Chester University students in action included Freddy Newberry (4:37:38) and Adam Poole (5:00:78) who both ran 1500m pb’s, Megan Bould (2:52:02 in the 800m), Emmanuel Fatimehin (7.48 in the 60m), Ilka Jose Maria (9.03 in the 60m), Niall Thomas (56.17 in the 400m), and Ollie Roberts (long jump pb of 5.42m). 

MICHAEL YOUNG broke the West Cheshire AC Male 20-34 record at the Austin, Texas Marathon, with a time of 2:43:18 for eighth place overall.

EWAN BRADLEY cleared a new under 20 men’s pole vault personal best height and new West Cheshire AC record of 4-41m in the Vault Manchester event held at SportCity, Manchester.

SEVERAL West Cheshire AC members represented their county at the North West Regional Sportshall Athletics Championships in Manchester.

Maddi Mercer, Jessica Brown, Teresa Arvidsson, Emily Owen, Macy Brett, Sophie Haslam, and Flora Plass combined for Cheshire in their Under 13 team victory against Merseyside, Greater Manchester, and Lancashire, and they now qualify to compete in the UK Sportshall Athletics Final at Sheffield, on Saturday, April 18.

Matthew Jones, James Haslam and Luke Haslam represented Cheshire in the Under 13 boys competition, while

Eleanor Neve, Esme Graham, Isla Entwistle, Mae Grant, Ursula Archer, Daniel Walker, Theo Shepherd and Will Rawson competed for Cheshire Under 11s.

WEST CHESHIRE AC will host the Cheshire Track and Field Championships at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 and 31.

The Club will also host the first round of the Under 17 and Under 20 Youth Development Track and Field League on Sunday, April 26; the second round of the Under 13 and Under 15 Youth Development Track and Field League on Saturday, June 6; the final round of the Northern Track and Field League on Saturday, August 1; and the final round of the Cheshire Track and Field League in September.

The Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track will also be the setting for the County Round of the English Schools Track and Field Cup on Wednesday, May 6; the Regional B Final South of the English Schools Track and Field League on Wednesday, June 3, and the Chester Primary Schools Championships on Monday, July 13.

Congratulations to the 397 runners who took part in this winter’s Essar West Cheshire AC Schools Cross-country series. Provisional results are now available near the foot of the Off-road page.

CARYS ROBERTS and Ruby Phillips secured podium places in this season’s Manchester Area Cross Country League.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club pair finished second and third in their respective age groups after the fifth and final round held at Heaton Park on Saturday.

Roberts claimed third place at the final round in the under 15 girls race with a time of 20 minutes to establish second spot overall, supported by Jodi Bemand (27th in 23:31), Georgina Duffey (33rd in 24:16), and Henrietta Duffey (42nd in 26:03).

Phillips clocked 12:12 for seventh position at Heaton Park and finished third overall in her under 11 girls age group.

Jessica Lark completed her league campaign with fifth spot overall in the under 13 girls age group after posting 14:10 for 12th position at Heaton Park, just three seconds behind club mate Sophie Haslam who was 11th, and backed up by Cerys Rowlands (16th in 14:30) and Aimee Phillips (27th in 14:58).

Dave Alexander was seventh in the over-50 men’s age group after posting 40:37, and Andrew Clague was 10th over-50 man in 41:44).

Sammy Hollins (11th in 18:48), Henry Robinson (20th in 19:42) and Dan Willetts (27th in 20:38) teamed up in the under 15 boys race, and Reece Munro clocked 13:31 for 17th spot in the under 13 boys race.

Anest Muller (17th over-35 lady in 42:31) was backed up by Debra Bemand (26th over-45 lady in 47:50), and Alex Duffey (33rd over-45 lady in 49:27) in the senior ladies event.

BRIAN BEATTIE of West Cheshire AC completed his 150th Chester parkrun on Saturday. The over-75-year-old clocked 30:41 for the 5k event held at the Countess of Chester Country Park course.

MOLLY BRENNAN and Ruby Carlile completed a double celebration for Christleton High at the final round of the Essar West Cheshire AC Schools Cross Country Race Series.

Brennan won the year seven girls event in a time of 8:40, ahead of runner-up Eleanor Williams (Kings), and Rebecca Smith (Chester Catholic High) in third spot, while Carlile won the year eight girls race.

Zak Ireland (Bishop Heber) won the year eight boys race ahead of second placed Andrew Barratt (Bishop Bluecoat) and Matthew Jones (Upton) was third.

Camren Booth (Upton) won the year seven boys race ahead of runner up Oliver Mallon (Kings).

Daniel Walker (Tarvin) posted a winning time of 4:55 in the year six boys race ahead of Tom Yates (Newton) and Noah Woolgar (Boughton Heath).

Holly Coates (Kings) claimed victory in the year six girls race ahead of runner up Holly Cooke (Saighton) and third placed Mollie Kerr (Helsby Hillside).

Thomas Rimmer (Overleigh St Marys) celebrated success in the year five boys race ahead of runner up Hugo McLintock (Mill View) and Joshua Evans (Farndon) in third spot.

Ruby McIlveen (Bishop Wilson) won the year five girls race ahead of Miley McNab (St Clares) and Sophie Taylor (Kings).

Logan Sefton (Kings) won the year four boys event ahead of runner up Leo Anstey (Boughton Heath) and third placed Dylan Chandler (Christleton).

Anna Birkett-Evans (The Firs) won the year four girls race ahead of Florence Harte (Tarvin) in second spot, and Lowri Phoenix (Tarporley) in third place.

Ben Brassington (Newton) won the year three boys race ahead of Noah Booth (Upton Heath) and Sidney Carr (Acresfield) in third position.

Emma Gauller (Willaston) won the year three girls race in front of Olivia Zarac (Upton Heath) in second spot and third placed Amelia Snowden (Tattenhall).

HELPERS NEEDED FOR CHESTER JUNIOR PARK RUN

Club member Mark Gallagher is working on setting up a 2km Junior parkrun at the Countess of Chester Country park every Sunday morning (9am start) from April for 4-14 year olds. Further details can be found here.

All Club members training at night on routes that involve crossing roads and where there is traffic are reminded to wear bright and reflective clothing. Please be safe.

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

All parents of youngsters attending track training sessions are reminded to collect their sons and daughters from the track – not from the car park. The Club wants to ensure everyone stays safe and that every youngster safely leaves every track training session.

All youngsters attending track training sessions should bring along warm clothing, preferably waterproofs, hats, gloves, as well as a bottle of water.

Anyone wanting to purchase club vests and/or hoodies is reminded that parents Vikki Brett and Joanne Lark will sell club kit at the EPSV Track Office AFTER Tuesday night training sessions.

The Club needs urgent help, support, and assistance from parents during Tuesday evening training sessions at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track (6.30pm-8pm).

ABIGAIL IROZURU was a special guest at West Cheshire Athletic Club’s annual presentation evening.

The British number one female long jumper made a speech and presented trophies at the event which attracted an audience of nearly 200 people at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chester.

Irozuru, who is hoping to represent Great Britain at this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games, had competed in Germany hours before arriving in Chester and presented awards to West Cheshire AC members as young as nine years of age through to 59 years of age who had demonstrated hard work, commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication in their favoured disciplines which included track and field, road running, cross country running, fell running, and sportshall athletics.

Joseph Morrison and Laura Turley won the men’s and women’s cups, while Paul Morrison was presented with the Chris Goodwin Memorial Cup, Oliver James received the Wright Trophy, and long serving official, Eddie Gore, was presented with the Club Person of the Year Award.

Age group winners this year included Ruby Phillips, Kadie Gledhill, William Mallon, Noah Woolgar, Maddi Mercer, Aimee Phillips, Luke Parker, Matthew Jones, Imogen Pughe, Emma Powell, Uzezi Onomerike, Henry Robinson, Abigail Cartwright, Ceris Gaffney, Matthew Webb, Fraser Campbell, Beth McMahon, Lily Moorhouse, Josh Ford, Jac Goodall, Kerry Riley, Ellen McMahon, Bradley Spurdens, Tom Booth, Alex Duffey, Ellie Robinson, Andy Parker, and Dave McKay.

CARYS ROBERTS celebrated success at the Cheshire Schools Cross Country Championships at Knights Grange, Winsford.

Roberts won the 3.5km Junior Girls race ahead of 10th-placed West Cheshire AC team mate Jessica Lark, Martha Willetts (13th), Ruby Carlile (18th), and Megan White (33rd). 

Jamie Richardson finished third in the 5.5km Intermediate Boys race ahead of Isaac Tait (eighth), Sammy Hollins (10th), and Henry Robinson (21st).

Luke Parker posted sixth spot in the 4km Junior Boys race, ahead of Charlie McMullan (eighth), Dan Willetts (15th), and Nathan Broomfield (34th).

Sion Roberts posted 10th spot in the 6.6km Senior Boys race and Jodi Bemand finished 17th in the 4km Intermediate Girls race. 

Cerys Rowlands finished 10th in the 2km Minor girls race ahead of team mate Eleanor Williams (15th), Amelia McLintock (19th), and Lara Fields (35th).  

HOLLY BOSWORTH and Ruby Wisbey pocketed medals at the Northern Indoor Championships at Sheffield.

Bosworth secured a silver medal in the under 13 girls high jump with a new personal best clearance of 1-35m, and Wisbey achieved a new under 15 girls long jump personal best of 5.21m, and added a time of 9.92 in the 60m hurdles.

Sara Pearson hit a new under 15 girls shot put personal best of 9.38m for fourth spot and posted 27.62 in her 200m semi after 27.28 in her heat

Macy Brett posted 9.04 seconds in her under 13 girls 60m final for sixth spot after clocking 8.92 in her semi, and a new pb of 8.89 in her heat, and clocked 29.37 in her 200m final after a pb of 28.96 in her heat, as well as a new long jump pb of 4.12m. 

while Sophie Haslam posted an under 13 girls 800m pb of 2:35.09 and 200m pb of 30.27, and Teresa Arvidsson clocked an under 13 girls 200m pb of 31.09. 

Fergus Garland posted 8.27 seconds in his under 15 boys 60m semi-final having clocked a personal best of 8.06 seconds in his heat, and a new 200m best of 25.57 in his semi after 25.20 in his heat.

Maddi Mercer posted a new under 15 girls 60m personal best of 8.64 seconds in her semi after posting 8.51 in her heat, and clocked 28.47 in her 200m semi after a 27.61 in her heat.

JOSEPH MORRISON was crowned under 20 men’s champion after winning the final round of the North Wales Cross Country League.

Morrison posted 31 minutes 48 seconds for victory in the men’s race at The Marches School, Oswestry, ahead of West Cheshire AC team mates Neil Finegan (fourth over-45 man in 34:31), Dave Alexander (first over-50 man in 35:17), Steve Fernyhough (sixth over-35 man in 35:38), Paul Morrison (sixth under 20 man in 35:49), Andrew Clague (third over-50 man overall in 37:28), Neil Hershaw (first over-55 man in 37:33), Richard Hayes (17th over-45 man in 39:23), Andy Carter (19th over-45 man in 39:34), Mark Davies (19th over-40 man in 44:55), and Dave Tiernan (17th over-55 man in 48:40).

West Cheshire AC’s senior men finished fourth at the final round and sixth overall in Division One, while the veteran men were fourth at the final round and fifth overall.

Kerry Riley clocked 21:19 for second spot in the women’s race, backed up by West Cheshire AC team mates Anest Muller (seventh over-35 lady in 23:40), Ellie Robinson (sixth over-45 lady in 23:43), Ellen McMahon (14th lady in 24:43), Clare Mallon (eighth over-45 lady in 25:01), Debra Bemand (12th over-45 lady in 27:13), and Alex Duffey (14th over-45 lady in 28:00), while Lucia Pyne finished third overall.

West Cheshire AC’s ladies finished sixth team at the final race and ended the season in third spot overall in Division One, while the veteran women were eighth at the final round and fourth overall.

Members can buy tickets online until 5.30pm on Saturday for the Annual Club Awards Evening being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chester, on Saturday 1st February, or pay on the door. Our guest speaker is UK Number One Female Long Jumper, Abigail Irozuru. The link to buy tickets is here.

Raffle tickets will be on sale at the Club Awards Evening (6.30pm start), so please remember to bring some money along and support the annual event.

CLUB TREASURER VACANCY

Saturday sees the West Cheshire AC Annual Awards Evening, at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chester. Please arrive for a 6.30pm start.

The final round of the North Wales Cross Country League takes place on Saturday at The Marches School, Oswestry, (1pm start).

The Cheshire Schools Cross Country Championships take place at Knights Grange, Winsford, on Saturday (10am start).

The British Universities and Colleges Cross Country Championships take place at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, on Saturday.

The Northern Masters Cross Country Championships, take place on Saturday at Spenborough.

The Northern Indoor Under 13s and Under 15s Championships take place on Sunday at Sheffield.

The Alsager Five Miles Road Race takes place on Sunday.

And West Cheshire AC have a stall at the Sports Market in the Storyhouse, Chester, on Saturday morning between 9.30am-1pm.

HELPERS NEEDED FOR CHESTER JUNIOR PARKRUN

Club member Mark Gallagher is working on setting up a 2km Junior parkrun at the Countess of Chester Country park every Sunday morning (9am start) from April for 4-14 year olds. Further details can be found here.

ENGLAND INDOOR AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS

The closing date for entries to the England Indoor Under 15, 17 and 20 Championships being held on February 23, is February 3.

BE SEEN AND BE SAFE

All Club members training at night on routes that involve crossing roads and where there is traffic are reminded to wear bright and reflective clothing. Please be safe.

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

All parents of youngsters attending track training sessions are reminded to collect their sons and daughters from the track – not from the car park. The Club wants to ensure everyone stays safe and that every youngster safely leaves every track training session.

All youngsters attending track training sessions should bring along warm clothing, preferably waterproofs, hats, gloves, as well as a bottle of water.

CLUB KIT

Anyone wanting to purchase club vests and/or hoodies is reminded that parents Vikki Brett and Joanne Lark will sell club kit at the EPSV Track Office AFTER Tuesday night training sessions.

Payment can be made by cash or by cheque (made payable to West Cheshire AC).

URGENT HELP NEEDED

The Club needs urgent help, support, and assistance from parents during Tuesday evening training sessions at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track (6.30pm-8pm).

The club currently has a waiting list for under 11s, and this situation can only be resolved by asking parents to volunteer on a rota basis at Tuesday night training sessions.
