Press Report: Fernyhough is Tough Enough for Ultra Win

STEVE FERNYHOUGH has celebrated success at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club distance runner won the Chester Ultra 100 mile ultramarathon – his first-ever 100 mile ultra in a time of 21 hours nine minutes 14 seconds.

Steve negotiated a route combining the very best trails in the region, featuring the Sandstone Trail, the Marches Way beside the River Dee, Helsby Hill, Frodsham, Delamere Forest, Beeston and Peckforton, with 1,757 metres of ascent and 10 Checkpoints en-route.

He reached the finish line on Sunday morning at the home of his club after setting off at 6am on Saturday morning.

WEST CHESHIRE AC finished third in the eight-club North West Division One match of the Under 17 and Under 20 Youth Development Track and Field League held at Wigan’s Robin Park Stadium.

Fraser Campbell, Henry Robinson, Imogen Pughe, Nathan Broomfield, Tom Shillington, Carys Manson, Emma Holmes, Jessica Lark, Aimee Phillips, Helen Tenner, and Sara Pearson all secured victories.

Fraser won the under 20 men’s 400m in 55.1 seconds and the B 2,000m steeplechase in 8:01.2, while Henry won the B 400m hurdles in 69.1 seconds.

Imogen hit a winning mark of 13.92m in the under 20 women’s B javelin, and Nathan clocked a winning time of 55.1 seconds in the B 400m.

Tom won the under 17 men’s B discus with 14.67m, Carys posted a winning time of 28.2 seconds in the under 17 women’s B 200m.

Emma clocked a new under 17 women’s club record 300m time of 40.5 seconds and Jessica (43.9) completed a double success story in the event, and Jessica (2:19.6) then partnered Aimee (2:28.5) to a double victory in the 800m.

Helen achieved a double success in the under 17 women’s B long jump (4.28m), and discus (20.74m), while Sara powered her way to victory in the under 17 women’s shot put with 11.29m.

Back-up was provided by Ewan Lloyd, Jamie Richardson who clocked new under 20 men’s club records for the 1500m and 3,000m, Alfie Lane, Fergus Garland, Jodi Bemand, Ruby Wisbey, Matthew Jones, and Ellis Hancock.

MATCH RESULT: 1 Wirral 804.5 points; 2 Blackburn 699; 3 West Cheshire 527; 4 Blackpool Wyre and Fylde 384; 5 Stockport 285.5; 6 Leigh 274; 7 Southport Waterloo 256; 8 Wigan 161.

The next round of the Under 17 and Under 20 Youth Development League is scheduled to take place at Stanley Park, Blackpool, on Sunday, June 26.

JESSICA LARK clocked a new West Cheshire AC women’s 800m club record of 2:13.32 at the British Milers Club Meeting held at SportCity, Manchester, on Saturday.

EMMA HOLMES posted a new under 17 women’s club record time of 25.4 seconds at Wigan on Sunday.

FORTHCOMING fixtures for West Cheshire AC include the second round of the Cheshire Track and Field League at Longford Park Stadium, Trafford, this Sunday (11.45am start), and the English Schools Track and Field Cup Regional B Final, at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Wednesday (June 8), 11am start.

West Cheshire AC is inviting members aged 9 years old and above to compete at the Cheshire Track & Field League fixture at Longford Park Stadium, Trafford, on Sunday 5th June.

The fixture starts with a 3km race for men and women at 11.45am, and there are also sprint and middle distance races, a jump, and a throw, as well as relay races at the fixture.

Brio are inviting West Cheshire AC to an open day on Saturday 18th June, at EPSV, to promote the activities and services on offer at the centre to the local and wider community.

The Club has been offered a stall to promote the Club and additional time in the sports hall and relevant areas to run demonstrations or offer taster sessions to prospective new members.

There is no charge for this, hopefully if it is a nice day the stalls will be outside if not we will occupy space in the street that runs the length of the building. A table and 2 chairs will be provided and we can take our own pop up banners/marketing material to promote the Club and any freebies to hand out to members of the public.

Traci Shipley has qualified to represent Great Britain in next year’s European Triathlon Championships.

Traci achieved a second place finish in her 55-59 age group at Sunday’s Southport Triathlon, and finished 30th overall in the women’s race which attracted 159 finishers to secure her place at next year’s European Championships being held in Belgium.

Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation are organising their inaugural Delamere Dash 5K and 10K in Delamere Forest on September 18.

Press Report: Shipley in Shape for Euro Tri

TRACI SHIPLEY has qualified to represent Great Britain in next year’s European Triathlon Championships.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club member achieved a second place finish in her 55-59 age group at Sunday’s Southport Triathlon.

Traci finished 30th overall in the women’s race which attracted 159 finishers to secure her place at next year’s European Championships being held in Belgium.

Traci completed the 1.5km swim in 26 minutes two seconds, clocked one hour 13 minutes 40 seconds for her 40km bike section, and posted 49:34 for her 10km run.

The Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based outfit travelled to Manchester for the second round of the Under 13s and Under 15s Youth Development Track and Field League.

Theo won the under 15 boys 200m in a time of 24.99 seconds, while Emily grabbed a double success story in the under 15 girls 100m (12.63) and 200m (26.08).

Holly posted a victory in the under 15 girls B 100m with 13.23 seconds, while Ruby clocked a winning time and club age group record of 2:16.96 in the under 15 girls 800m.

Harriet spun the under 15 girls B discus to a winning mark of 19.60m, and Kara won the under 15 girls hammer with 27.30m.

Holly Bosworth, Macy Brett, Macey Jones and Emily Owen combined for victory in the under 15 girls 4x100m with 51.40 seconds, and Macy Brett, Cosette Wearden, Ruby Philips, and Sophie Haslam celebrated success in the under 15 girls 4x300m relay with a time of 2:59.05.

Will Rawson hit a winning mark of 27.44m in the under 13 boys javelin, while Lydia Walker won the under 13 girls B 150m in 21.18 seconds, and Esme Graham won the under 13 girls B high jump with a clearance of 1-20m.

Eva Brooks, Lydia Walker, Nancy Collins, and Faith Barlow-Gambles then teamed up for top spot in the under 13 girls 4x100m relay in a time of 55.58 seconds.

Other West Cheshire AC point scorers at Trafford included Daniel Walker, James Rawson, Nancy Farmer, Abigail Meyer, Teresa Arvidsson, Charlotte Austin, Dillon Jervis, Harry McKenna, Dylan Gledhill, Mae Grant, Ruby Billington, Emilia Pyper, and Satine Wearden.

The next round of the YDL Under 13s/Under 15s Competition will be hosted by West Cheshire AC at Ellesmere Port Sports Village, on Sunday, July 3. 

MICHAEL YOUNG represented West Cheshire AC at the Great Manchester Run Half Marathon and clocked one hour 11 minutes and 51 seconds for seventh spot.

Jodi Bemand completed her first half marathon in a club age group record time of 1:30:30, and her mum, Debra, posted 1:44:18.

Press Report: Hat Trick for Imogen and Dave

IMOGEN PUGHE and Dave McKay celebrated a hat-trick of victories at the Cheshire County Track and Field Championships.

The pair contributed to West Cheshire Athletic Club’s haul of 33 gold medals, 19 silver medals, and 13 bronze medals achieved at the two-day fixture held at Macclesfield.

Imogen bagged gold medals in the under 20 women’s 400m (57.77 seconds), 200m (26.79), and 800m (2:23.49), while Dave pocketed his treble from the senior men’s hammer (41.80m), improved his over-40 club record in the shot put (11.70m), and javelin (44.86m).

They were joined on the top of the podium by Kara Stoll, Danielle Erskine, Alan Littler, Eva Brooks, Satine Wearden, Nikki Gore, Emilia Pyper, James Rawson, Mae Grant, Holly Bosworth, Sara Pearson, Yasmin Smith, Nathan Broomfield, Emily Owen, Lewis Parsons, Ruby Phillips, Emma Holmes, Fergus Garland, Jessica Lark, Luke Parker, and Macy Brett.

Kara powered her way to success in the under 15 girls hammer (32.60m), and discus (19.42m), while Danielle produced a new personal best of 10.06m to improve her senior women’s club triple jump record, and Alan Littler cleared a winning height of 1-70m in the senior men’s high jump.

Eva won the under 13 girls long jump (4.13m) and 75m (10.77 seconds), while Satine hit 20.41m for top spot in the under 13 girls discus, and Nikki scored success in the senior women’s discus (30.49m), and shot put with an improved over 35 women’s club record of 10.32m, and also set a new age group club record in the hammer of 31.60m.

Emilia nailed a winning throw of 17.84m in the under 13 girls javelin, while James hit 28.12m for victory in the under 15 boys javelin, and Mae cleared a winning height of 1-20m in the under 13 girls high jump.

Holly cleared 1-35m for victory in the under 15 girls high jump, while Sara hit 11.95m for success in the under 17 women’s shot put, and Yasmin blasted her way to victory in the under 17 women’s 100m in 12.88 seconds.

Nathan rounded the under 17 men’s 400m hurdles in a winning time of 61.14 seconds, while Emily won the under 15 girls 100m in a time of 12.42 seconds, and Lewis secured success in the under 17 men’s 100m in 11.38 seconds.

Ruby grabbed glory in the under 15 girls 300m with 44.29 seconds and 800m (2:20.37), while Emma bagged a sprint double from the under 17 women’s 200m (25.98) and 300m (41.29), and Fergus secured success in the under 17 men’s 400m with 51.61 seconds.

Jessica achieved a double success story in the under 17 women’s 800m (2:19.90) and 1500m (4:49.16), while Luke landed victory in the under 17 men’s 3,000m (9:52.88), and Macy negotiated the under 15 girls 75m hurdles in a winning time of 11.76 seconds.

WEST CHESHIRE AC’s men and women celebrated team victories at Sunday’s Chester Half Marathon.

West Cheshire AC will be competing in the North West Premier Division of the Northern Track & Field League this year, following a second placed finish last year.

In order for the club to prepare for the new season, club members in the Under 17, Under 20, Senior and Veteran Age Groups need to let Club Managers, Dave McKay, Jenny Manning, and Alan Littler, about their availability for the following dates which are: Sunday 12th June at Longford Park, Trafford; Sunday 10th July at Robin Park, Wigan; and Saturday 6th August at Witton Park, Blackburn.

Press Report: Gold for Brassington at Bebington

NATHAN BRASSINGTON celebrated a hat-trick of victories for West Cheshire Athletic Club at Bebington Oval.

The talented multi-eventer won the under 15 boys 80m hurdles in 12.8 seconds, cleared 1-60m in the high jump, and hit a new personal best distance of 12.50m in the shot put.

He was joined in the winner’s circle on Sunday at the opening round of the Under 13s and Under 15s Youth Development Track and Field League by Theo Shepherd, Macey Jones, Ruby Phillips, Sophie Haslam, Harriet Wheeler, Kara Stoll, Will Rawson, Faith Barlow-Gambles, Lydia Walker, Eva Brooks, and the under 15 girls relay team of Emily Owen, Macy Brett, Macey Jones, and Lara Fields.

Theo clocked a winning time of 13.1 seconds in the under 15 boys 100m, while Macey posted 13.8 seconds for victory in her under 15 girls 100m race.

Ruby and Sophie teamed up for success in the under 15 girls 800m with winning times of 2:21.6 and 2:31.2 respectively.

Harriet powered her way to victory with 39.89m in the under 15 girls javelin and 19.36m in the discus, while Kara launched the under 15 girls hammer to a winning mark of 36.50m.

Will launched the under 13 boys javelin to a winning distance of 26.63m, while Faith won her under 13 girls 75m in 11.0 seconds, and Lydia clocked 21.5 seconds for victory in the under 13 girls 150m.

Eva hit a winning mark of 5.87m in the under 13 girls shot put, while Emily, Macy, Macey, and Lara combined for a winning under 15 girls 4x100m relay time of 51.7 seconds.

Other important point-scoring members of the West Cheshire AC team included Euan Garland, Lewis Morris, James Rawson, Cosette Wearden, Abigail Meyer, Teresa Arvidsson, Charlotte Austin, George Grimsditch, Noah Booth, Ellis Williams, Dylan Gledhill, Harry McKenna, Beth Manson, Emilia Pyper, Mae Grant, Maddy Cobb, Satine Wearden, and Esme Graham.

DAVE McKAY grabbed a gold medal at the British Masters Throws Pentathlon Championships, held at Horspath, Oxford, with 42.34m in the hammer, 49.93m in the javelin, 10.73m in the shot put, and 33.02m in the discus.

NEIL FINEGAN celebrated a new personal best of 34 minutes 22 seconds for second place in his over-45 men’s age group and 11th spot overall at the Market Drayton 10k Road Race.

TOM BOOTH won the Dinas Bran Hill Race, at Llangollen, in 32 minutes 27 seconds, while Henry Robinson (35:40) and Jodi Bemand (40:48) were winners in the under 20 age group.

FIXTURES this weekend include the Cheshire Track and Field Championships at Macclesfield on Saturday and Sunday, and the Chester Half Marathon on Sunday.

PROMOTING OUR CLUB…

Brio are inviting West Cheshire AC to an open day on Saturday 18th June 2022 at EPSV to promote the activities and services on offer at the centre to the local and wider community.

The Club has been offered a stall to promote the club and additional time in the sports hall and relevant areas to run demonstrations or offer taster sessions to prospective new members.

There is no charge for this, hopefully if it is a nice day the stalls will be outside if not we will occupy space in the street that runs the length of the building. A table and two chairs will be provided and we can take our own pop up banners/marketing material to promote the Club and any freebies to hand out to members of the public.

The event will take place from 11am–4pm.

RECORDS GALORE FOR MEMBERS

Michael Young marked his 35th birthday on Monday with a victory in the Milton Keynes Marathon with a time of two hours 29 minutes 36 seconds, just three days after clocking a new 5km club record time of 15 minutes 15 seconds at the Mid Cheshire 5km Road Race.

Luke Parker, Keely Smith, Debra Bemand and Joy Hickman were other club record breakers at the Mid Cheshire 5km event.

Luke achieved a new under 15 boys record time of 17 minutes, while Keely sliced six seconds off her over-35 age group best to post 18:15; Debra clocked a new over-50 women’s club record time of 22:12; and Joy posted a new over-55 women’s club record time of 22 minutes.

Other recent West Cheshire AC track and field record breakers include Jamie Richardson, Dave McKay, Imogen Pughe, Ellie Robinson, Joy Hickman, Danielle Erskine, and Nicola Gore who contributed towards their club’s second-placed finish in Saturday’s opening round of the Northern League held at Ellesmere Port Sports Village.

Jamie achieved a new under 20 men’s 5,000m best time of 16:09.5, and Dave hit a new over-40 men’s discus record mark of 32.16m, while Imogen rounded the 400m in a new under 20 women’s best of 58.7 seconds.

Ellie set a new over-50 women’s 800m record of 2:43.1 and improved the over-50 women’s 1500m record with 5:37.7, while Joy set a new over-55 women’s 3,000m record of 13:12.8.

Danielle improved the senior women’s triple jump record with a mark of 10.03m, and Nicola set a new over-35 women’s discus record of 32.21m and improved the over-35 women’s shot put record to 10.21m.

Satine Wearden and Holly Bosworth produced top performances for the Club on Sunday at the opening round of the Cheshire Track and Field League held at Macclesfield.

Satine achieved 19.22m for victory in the under 13 girls discus, and Holly cleared a winning height of 1-42m in the under 15 girls high jump.

The pair were supported by Rob and Charlotte Austin, Clare Mallon, under 15 boys Daniel Walker, Noah Woolgar, and James Rawson, under 13 boys Ellis Williams, Dylan Gledhill, George Grimsditch, and Harry McKenna, under 15 girls Lara Fields, Macey Jones, Teresa Arvidsson, Cosette Wearden, under 13 girls Esme Graham, Eva Brooks, Mae Grant, and Maddy Cobb.

Macy achieved 11.91 seconds in the under 15 girls 75m hurdles, Ruby rounded the under 15 girls 800m in 2:18.89, Macey clocked 13.50 seconds in the under 13 girls 100m, while Beth posted 10.90 seconds in the under 13 girls 75m and 21.94 in the 150, and 3.83m in the long jump, while Nia clocked 12.30 seconds in the under 11 girls 75m and 24.26 in the 150m.

Sophie Haslam posted 44.05 seconds in the under 15 girls 400m, 2:29.61 in the 800m, and long jumped 3.81m, while Kara Stoll hit 35.74m in the under 15 girls hammer, Charlotte Austin cleared 1-31m in the under 15 girls high jump, and Harriet Wheeler hit 32.10m in the under 15 girls javelin.
