REVISED TRACK & FIELD TRAINING ARRANGEMENTS

Eddie Gore and Dennis Wall have stepped down as the Club’s Covid-19 Liaison Officers during track and field training at Ellesmere Port Sports Village because of underlying health problems and shielding reasons.

They are being replaced by: MONDAYS – Karl Fenney and Jane Palmer; TUESDAYS – Mark Duffey and Adrian Gledhill; THURSDAYS – Dave McKay and Darren Shillington; SATURDAYS – Dave McKay and Leanne Wheeler.

Many thanks to Eddie and Jill Gore for all their valued help and assistance in putting the Covid-19 Club risk assessment and Club training plan in place because without all of their time and effort we couldn’t have restarted in August after lockdown.

And many thanks to all those volunteers who are now Covid-19 co-ordinators to help keep everybody safe, as well as physically and mentally fit, because without your help the Club couldn’t possibly continue training at the track.

If you are present before, during or after club training, it would be appreciated if you could please lend a helping hand to lessen the work load for everyone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Many happy returns to the following Club members who celebrate their birthdays this week:

Thomas Tweedle, Peter Smith, Isla Entwistle, Adam Howe, Olivia Brookfield, Emily Owen, Healy Smyth, Elliott Bujac, Grace McCabe, Millicent Rees, Charlie McMullan, Isaac Tait, Erin Hart, Sinead Malone, Kevin Miller, Margaret Brooks.

And next week: Louis Gardner, Alex Mason, William Scott, Millie Warren, Thomas Booth, Harvey Hill-Jones, Ruby Phillips, Pablo Arechaga, Luke Ellis, Katherine Harvey, Richard Hayes, Sarah Hibbert, Alan Morris, Niall Thomas.

CONGRATULATIONS STEVE!

Steve Fernyhough celebrated success in the Ultra Everest 100km Race.

He completed the virtual event utilising the same mapping as the actual event in the Himalayas in a time of 12 hours 25 minutes for victory in the event that attracted 103 finishers.

Inspired by the “Classic Everest Base Camp trail” covered by Everest climbers in the early 20th century, the route takes the early pioneer’s trail to Everest Base Camp starting from Jiri (1878m) in Nepal.

All runners who completed the 100km race were awarded the ‘Limited Edition’ Ultra Everest 135 metal medal, while the top three finishers were also awarded a #GBUltras Shield Trophy.

BRIAN WRIGHT secured a podium place at the Cheshire 10k Road Race.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club over-65 veteran posted 45 minutes 45 seconds for second spot in his age group at the fixture held at Arley Hall, near Northwich.

He was joined at the event by clubmate, Sarah Hibbert, who was 13th in her over 50 age category with a time of 52:37.

The race was won by Omar Ahmed, of Birchfield Harriers, who clocked 29:24, with Chris Parr second in 29:36, and Alex Brown (Morpeth) in third spot with 29:37.

TWO venues are in the frame to host the 2021 Cheshire Cross Country Championships if the fixture is allowed to go ahead in January.

Delamere Forest, with Vale Royal AC as hosts, is one possibility, while Betley Farm, Staffordshire, a private site close to the Cheshire border that has been used for the Staffordshire Championship and North Staffs Cross Country League, is another possibility.

Forest Park, Birchwood, Warrington, hosted by Spectrum Striders, is another proven site with good support from the club. However, isolating the event from the public for Covid would be a problem, so the option has been discounted.

COUNTY CROSS-COUNTRY UPDATE

Two venues are in the frame to host the 2021 Cheshire Cross Country Championships. It may not be possible to hold the County championship in January 2021, but it has been agreed by Cheshire AA that plans should be developed.

Delamere Forest, with Vale Royal AC as hosts, is one possibility, while Betley Farm, Staffordshire, a private site close to the Cheshire border that has been used for the Staffordshire Championship and North Staffs XC league, is another possibility.

Forest Park, Birchwood, Warrington, hosted by Spectrum Striders, is another proven site with good support from the club. However, isolating the event from the public for COVID would be a problem, so the option has been discounted.

ENGLAND ATHLETICS GUIDANCE

Following the new restrictions outlined on 22nd September by UK government, guidance for OUTDOOR club and group activity as well as all types of OUTDOOR competitions for athletics and running is not affected. However, guidance for INDOOR activity has been updated. Indoor activity for Under 18’s can take place with larger numbers in a Covid-secure environment. Indoor training for athletes over the age of 18 is restricted to groups of 6 (1 coach to 5 athletes).

Please see below for the England Athletics guidance document for a return to restricted track and field competition in a Covid-19 secure setting (with new guidance for Cross Country added 18 September and links to Trail Running guidance added 1 October). This is written knowing that any step back to competition needs to be taken carefully and in full recognition of, and adherence to, government guidance that is in place at the time on Covid-19: EA will update the guidance if and when necessary – details here.

UPDATED ONLINE ATHLETICS WEBINARS

In these unprecedented times, I wanted to draw the club’s attention to some of the great resources available online. England Athletics is expanding its campaign to support Athletics and Running for everyone @home, with a focus on ‘Running @home’ support and advice. The homepage can be accessed here.

There are many webinars, interviews and tips from top coaches and athletes on how to stay conditioned and focused.

In addition, there are some fantastic videos for 4-11 year olds on the Funetics webpage put together in conjunction with England Athletics. The videos demonstrate parents and children (aged 4-11) taking part in FUN activities based on fundamental core movement skills: running, jumping and throwing. Funetics is a programme that has been designed to reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2. At this time when our children are currently schooling at home, we hope that these video activities will support the need for education to continue at home.  You can access the videos here.

The link to other updated webinars can be found here, here and here.
