WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club is throwing its doors open this Sunday, (August 15), to anyone wanting to run, jump, or throw.
Club coach and official, Dennis Wall, is keen for the Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based outfit to promote athletics on the back of the Tokyo Olympic Games at a free of charge Come and Try Athletics Day between 10am and 2pm.
“It is important for the local community to have a chance to experience athletics after watching the sport on television during the last week,” Wall said.
“Many people will have been inspired by the achievements in the Olympic track and field events and the least their local athletics club can do is provide everyone with an opportunity to have a go.
“West Cheshire AC caters for anyone aged eight and a half years old and above and the club would love to see people trying running, jumping and throwing.
“The club has fully qualified coaches and a squad of helpers who are all enthusiastic volunteers and want to see the local community enjoying athletics.”
This Sunday’s event is being promoted by West Cheshire AC and funded by a successful application to the National Lottery Community Fund.
Wall added: “West Cheshire AC is grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund for supporting the Come and Try Athletics Day initiative.
“We have a dedicated coaching squad who supervise athletes throughout the week in a range of events and the training sessions at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track attract many enthusiastic members.
“Many of our coaches started as volunteers because their youngsters were already members and they discovered a love for the sport after recognising the rewards of watching athletes improve.
“The atmosphere during any club training session always gives me a buzz, and I’ve always been impressed by the results achieved from our athletes because of the dedication, guidance and knowledge of our coaches.
“Athletics is undoubtedly the most exciting and inclusive sport in the world with events to suit all ages, abilities and skill sets. There are many facets to this wonderful sport and itβs not only about the athletes.
βWest Cheshire AC is reliant on volunteers – people who freely give their time to help make the club a success, and we want more people to experience those rewards.β

The respected former president, senior coach and founder member of the Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based organisation, who used to live in Tarvin, passed away aged 83, in a Bath nursing home, after living with motor neurone disease for a number of years.
“It is a very sad time for everyone at West Cheshire AC because Dan was instrumental as a coach for the development of many athletes who held him in high esteem,” Club coach and official, Dennis Wall said.
“Dan devoted many voluntary hours in all weathers at the athletics track working to help and support club members to the best of his ability.
“His knowledge of athletics was infectious and he was highly respected because he wanted club members to realise their potential, enjoy the sport and strive for success.”
Many tributes have been received from West Cheshire AC members, including former England international javelin thrower, Sophie Percival: “I cant believe I’m writing this but I know a lot of peoples hearts are heavy at West Cheshire AC right now.
“I’ve never met anyone whoβs worked so hard to help his athletes achieve potential, he worked tirelessly and always with a smile on his face. The last few years have been hard not seeing you, even though we know as a team youβve always been behind us, and now youβll be looking down on us.
“For me personally, Dan was always behind me and giving me the kick up the backside I always needed, he helped me go beyond my beliefs, achieve and succeed to a great level.
“Our Northern League round at the weekend was dedicated to you. Rest in peace legend.”
West Cheshire AC’s Northern Track and Field League squad wore black ribbons at Saturday’s fixture held at Trafford in tribute.
MACEY JONES, of West Cheshire AC, pocketed a bronze medal after achieving 4.12m in the under 13 girls long jump at the Welsh Junior Championships at Newport.
