Off Road

We take part in off-road events throughout the year, such as trail and fell races throughout North Wales and the North-west. In the autumn and winter, we compete in various cross-country leagues and championships. as well as organise the popular West Cheshire AC Schools Cross-country race series. Our off-road runners also run on the roads, and some run on the track too.

Cross-country

Please read this document before deciding if you want to take represent the club in the following leagues.

We are involved in three cross-country leagues, two of which are free-to-enter for our club members, and all of which begin in late autumn and run well into winter, as follows:

  • North Staffordshire League: Races across all age groups from under-11s upwards, at four venues before Christmas. WCAC members must self-enter in advance.

  • North Wales League: Races for women and men over 15 at five venues between September and February, and for under-11s to under-15s at four venues between the same dates.

  • Manchester Area League (see also here): Races across all age groups (no under-11s at first round), at five venues between October and February.

We also compete in cross-country championship events that take place between January and March. These include the Cheshire, North of England, and English National Cross-country Championships. Those selected to run for Cheshire also compete at the Inter-counties Cross-country Championships.

Age groups for these championship events range from under-13s to seniors and veterans, with the addition of under-11s at the Cheshire championships.

Some members also enter individually into the British Athletics Cross Challenge event at Sefton Park, Liverpool, that incorporates the UK team trials for the European Cross-country Championships.

Details of these events for the 2021-22 season, including how to enter, are summarised here.

WCAC Off-road Summer League 2019
The purpose of this league is to encourage WCAC members to take part in off-road events, ten of which have been selected on the basis of their low key nature and reasonably short distances – both to travel to and to race. Short doesn’t mean easy, however – most of these events have far more ups and downs than flat in them!

Details of the events, and rules, are here (events are also listed on the Fixtures and Home pages). Final standings, and results for rounds 6 to 10, are here, and results from the first five rounds are here.

WCAC Schools Cross-country Series
Ellesmere Port Sports Village, Stanney Lane Ellesmere Port CH65 9DB, on three Saturdays over autumn and winter.

Years 3-8. Enter on the day, free of charge. First race 10:00am – please allow plenty of time for registration!

Medals will be presented to the first three finishers in each race.
The first 3 finishers from each school in each race will count towards their school’s team score (team medals will not be presented for each race).

After the end of the series, each runner’s highest 3 finishing positions from the 4 rounds will count towards their overall score (eg positions 2, 4, 1, and 6 over four rounds will give a score of 7), so runners only need to run in 3 races to get an overall score. Medals will be given to the top 3 runners overall.
