WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club has cancelled the 2021 Chester Spring Five Miles Road Race.
TheΒ accurately-measured and popular midweek event, first held in 1993, has been pulled because of Covid-19 restrictions.”After careful consideration and a review of the current guidance for hosting and organising road races, West Cheshire AC took the difficult decision to cancel the Chester Spring Five Miles Road Race which was scheduled to be held in April,” a club official said.
“This news is obviously hugely disappointing, but West Cheshire AC hope everyone understands the decision in the current climate. “Under current Covid-19 guidelines and requirements from England Athletics, West Cheshire AC would not be able to organise the Chester Spring Five Miles Road Race in its usual format.
“We need to put the safety of our local community first and in the current situation we donβt feel we will be doing this if we try to put on the race. “West Cheshire AC hasnβt taken this decision lightly and we understand that regular runners of the race will be disappointed. But please be assured we will be working really hard to make sure we are back in April 2022.”
MIKE LAMB was appointed club president at West Cheshire AC’s virtual online AGM on Monday night, with Jon Clarke (chairman), Dennis Wall (vice-chairman), Clare Mallon (secretary), and Darren Shillington (treasurer) all being re-elected as club officers.
The club will be holding the AGM meeting via Zoom this year.Β We’d encourage as many members as possible to attend – you have to be present at the meeting to vote, so we really do need your involvement.Β Please e-mail club secretary, Clare, for a link to the Zoom meeting at:Β [email protected]

UPDATED ONLINE ATHLETICS WEBINARS
In these unprecedented times, I wanted to draw the clubβs attention to some of the great resources available online. England Athletics is expanding its campaign to support Athletics and Running for everyone @home, with a focus on βRunning @homeβ support and advice. The homepage can be accessed here.
There are many webinars, interviews and tips from top coaches and athletes on how to stay conditioned and focused.
In addition, there are some fantastic videos for 4-11 year olds on the Funetics webpage put together in conjunction with England Athletics. The videos demonstrate parents and children (aged 4-11) taking part in FUN activities based on fundamental core movement skills: running, jumping and throwing. Funetics is a programme that has been designed to reflect the requirements of the National Curriculum Key Stage 1 and 2. At this time when our children are currently schooling at home, we hope that these video activities will support the need for education to continue at home. You can access the videos here.
The link to other updated webinars can be found here, here and here.
STAYING FIT AND HEALTHY
The links below offer a range of advice on exercises we can all do while confined indoors.
CHESHIRE County Athletics Association is hoping to organise a county cross country championships this winter.
Officials from around the county are working hard to put arrangements and agreements in place so that a fixture can be held in January or February.
Cheshire AA has already received permission from the landowner of Betley Farm, in Staffordshire, to use his premises for the event.
West Cheshire Athletic Club members will be hoping to see the championships go ahead to help focus their minds on racing after many months of training.
WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club will be staging their Annual General Meeting via Zoom on Monday, November 30. Members wanting to attend need to request a link to the meeting from Club secretary, Clare Mallon.
ENGLISH Cross Country Association will assess no later than the end of December whether the 2021 National Championships can be held, dependent on restrictions imposed by the Government and England Athletics.
The English National Cross Country Championships has only ever been cancelled during the two World Wars and the 2021 fixture is scheduled to be held on Saturday, March 6, at Parliament Hill, London.
John Driscoll has dug out results from those club members who found (non-virtual) races to compete in during the period between lockdowns, to compose endurance league tables as at the ed of October 2020.
Michael currently splitting the two Andys in the men’s league, with Steve close behind, while Alex, Ellie, Clare and Deb are all close in the women’s league.
A proposal from John: in view of the problems since mid-March which continue, roll over the 2020 results into 2021 in the hope by combining two years we might get a “year” of competition. What do members think (“Stop the count now” is NOT an option π )?
See near the bottom of the road race page for further details.
Everyone is understandably frustrated and disappointed about the second lockdown from Thursday this week, but West Cheshire AC want to continue to help you stay physically and mentally fit and safe so that we can all come out the other side in the best possible shape.
We all still have memories of the first lockdown and of how we coped, so hopefully that will be a big advantage moving forward, so we must all stay in touch and help one another in these difficult times.
Please remember that I’m only a phone call away if you need to chat on 07968 643038, and I’ll do my best to keep you informed and entertained by producing this weekly Club Newsletter.
But I need you to help me by letting me know how you are getting on and what you are doing to keep yourself safe and to keep in good physical and mental condition, so please email me your ideas and suggestions to keep everyone in touch at: [email protected]
Finally, if you’ve got some steps handy to where you live, what about trying these Zoey Clark exercises?
