ENTRIES OPEN FOR 25th CLUB ANNIVERSARY TRACK & FIELD OPEN MEETINGSย 

The Club is organising two open track and field meetings at Ellesmere Port Sports Village to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The meetings will be held on Saturday 18th March (sprints, hurdles, and jumps), and Sunday 26th March (middle distance running and throws).

Members can enter via an entry form which will be available from the Track Container Office.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED

Helpers are needed for the Chester Spring Five Miles Road Race being organised by the Club at Cheshire County Sports Club, Upton, on 12th April. If you can help please email Dennis ASAP at: [email protected]


CHESHIRE ROAD RACE GRAND PRIX

This competition, including an age-graded grand prix, is back for 2023. Details are available at http://www.cheshireaa.com It will feature eight races, including our own Spring 5 and Guilden Sutton 10k โ€“ though WCAC members are politely reminded to ensure that they supply a volunteer if they intend to run in any WCAC-organised or -supported events such as these.

HELP NEEDED

Cheshire County Athletics Association have offered to provide volunteers for the English National Championships being held at Bolesworth Castle, on 25th February. Can you help?

All volunteers will receive ยฃ25, a lunch pack and free parking (ยฃ5 to non-helpers), and will also get the best view of the races!

We need lots of marshals, a few marshal team leaders to manage the three course areas, and a small number of people to sell programs.

If youโ€™re interested in volunteering, message [email protected] with your contact details and say what your role and availability could be (Sat am/ Sat pm/ both).

WELSH CASTLES RELAY RACE

The club is considering entering a team into the Welsh Castles Relay Race which will take place over the weekend of 10-11 June. This is a 20 stage road relay race with individual legs of around 10 miles. Further information is available via the link below. Tattenhall Runners are organising a Traffic Management Officer (TMO) course on Saturday March 11th. Places cost ยฃ74 each, which will be funded by West Cheshire AC. This is a TESS-managed course to gain the TMO qualification.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who is happy to help out the club for an hour or two at any of the few events that we organise every year. If interested, please email Andy Carter ASAP at: [email protected]

NATIONAL CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS, BOLESWORTH, SATURDAY FEBRUARY 25TH

Entries for this event via West Cheshire AC have now closed, but individuals should be able to self-enter before the closing date of Friday January 27TH at https://www.race-results.co.uk/natxc23e

The organisers Cheshire AA are looking for helpers at this event. Lots of marshals are needed, as well as a few marshal team leaders to manage the three course areas, and a small number of people to sell programs.

Help is also needed setting up the course for a few hours on Thursday February 23rd and Friday 24th, which provides an opportunity for volunteers to see the venue and course.

All volunteers will receive ยฃ25, a lunch pack and free parking – and will also get the best view of the races!

CLUB CELEBRATION EVENING

All club members and their families are invited to the West Cheshire AC Celebration Evening, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chester, on Saturday, February 11th 2023. As well as the annual achievement awards in all age categories, there will be games, a quiz and a raffle, with superb prizes, and a hot buffet.

The Club has a few TMOs who are in need of an online refresher course so this isnโ€™t for them but thereโ€™s an opportunity here to get some more people trained up if thereโ€™s any volunteers. If you are interested, please email Andy Carter ASAP at: [email protected]

There is still time to enter these two events, the only requirements for which are that you are a FIRST-CLAIM member of West Cheshire AC, are in an age group from under 13s to veterans, and that you can commit to turning up on the day! Details are:

Congratulations to Sammy Hollins who celebrated a new Under 20 Men’s Club record 10k time of 33 minutes 23 seconds for 69th position at the Ribble Valley 10k Road Race which incorporated the North of England Championships on 27th December.

There is still time to enter these two events, the only requirements for which are that you are a FIRST-CLAIM member of West Cheshire AC, are in an age group from under 13s to veterans, and that you can commit to turning up on the day! Details are:

The England Athletics Open U20, U17 and U15 Indoor Championships will be held at the EIS Sheffield on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February 2023. PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

All parents/ guardians of youngsters attending track training sessions are reminded to collect them from the track, not from the car park. The club wants to ensure everyone stays safe and that every youngster safely leaves every track training session.
We also ask that all youngsters attending track training sessions should bring along warm clothing, preferably waterproofs, hat, gloves, and a bottle of water.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP OUT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS?

This Saturday (December 10th) sees the final round of the West Cheshire AC Schools Cross-country Race Series at Ellesmere Port Sports Village. This series of low-key cross-country fixtures helps strengthen a link between the club and local schools and provides a steppingstone into club athletics.

Help and support is needed either to set up the course from 8am, help out at registration in the Trackside Room from 9:30am, marshal, officiate, or hare from 10am, or tidy away course markings after the last race before 12 noon.

LAST CHANCE!…LONDON MARATHON SUNDAY 23rd APRIL 2023 CLUB ENTRIES

Procedure for allocation of club places to West Cheshire AC England Athletics competition registered members aged 18 or over on race day.

The club receives a number of guaranteed entries to the London Marathon (for 2023 club entry this is 2).

Guaranteed entries are given to appropriate club members for personal use only (i.e. not transferable to anyone else) on the following basis:

Priority 1: Members who have assisted at our road race events (Spring 5, Guilden Sutton 10K, Borders League event hosted by West Cheshire AC and Round the Walls) and helping out at the Chester Half Marathon.

Within this group the priority order is as follows:

1. Members who have applied for a place through the public ballot and have been unsuccessful.

2. Members who have not applied via the ballot but would like to be considered for a club entry.

Priority 2: Members who have not helped out at club road race events. Within this group the priority order is as follows:

1. Members who have applied for a place through the public ballot and have been unsuccessful.

2. Members who have not applied via the ballot but would like to be considered for a club entry. If there are more applicants fulfilling the Priority 1 conditions than the number of places available then a draw will be carried out of all those qualifying, starting with the highest priority group and progressively moving to each successive category until all the club places have been allocated. This will be done at the West Cheshire AC Committee meeting on Tuesday night 13th December). Successful applicants will be notified and sent a unique link to the London Marathon site. The applicant will then apply for their place. Standard entry fees are payable to London Marathon by the applicant.

In order to be considered for a club place members should email Ian Gloyne-Phillips at: [email protected] BEFORE SATURDAY 10th DECEMBER to request an entry.

COACHING COURSES

There is an Coaching Assistant Course being held at Wigan on Sunday 8th January 2023, and an Athletics Coaching Course being held at Sport City, Manchester on 14th and 15th January 2023.

The Club Annual General Meeting was held at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Trackside Room, on Friday night. Mark Duffey (Chairman), Dennis Wall (Vice-Chairman), Julian Tegg (Secretary), Darren Shillington (Treasurer), Jane Pughe (Membership Secretary), Eddie Gore (Facilities Officer), Dennis Wall (Track and Field Officer), Ian Gloyne-Phillips (Road Running Officer), Dave Alexander (Cross Country Secretary), Leanne Wheeler and Anna Woolgar (Welfare Officers) were all re-elected.

To those running in the Manchester Area Cross-country League, please be aware that the round that was due to take place at Heaton Park on Saturday, December 3, will not take place on that date. It is rescheduled for Saturday, March 11, 2023, still at Heaton Park.

To Cosette Wearden who clocked a new Under 17 ladies’ Club Record time for the 1,000 metres of 3:10.49 at the Northern Open Indoor Meeting held in Sheffield.

As well as Wullie McGarrell (third M55 in 1:03:02) and Sarah Hibbert (third F55 in 1:26:34) who completed the Preston 10 miles Road Race.

Micheal Young (3rd in 1:14 :17); David Shearer (1:29:12); and Cathryn Whalley (1:56:13) who completed the Conwy Half Marathon.

Mark Davies (2:18:34) who completed the Run GP Oulton Park.
