Press report: Why Not Volunteer?

VOLUNTEERS are being invited by West Cheshire Athletic Club to attend an Officials Taster Day.

The event this Sunday from 10.30am at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track, provides an opportunity to experience being a starter, marksman, timekeeper, track judge, or field judge.

“Athletics couldn’t take place without volunteers – they are the sport’s lifeblood, so it is vital that my club offers a chance to anyone wanting to get involved,” says West Cheshire Athletic Club track and field officer, Dennis Wall.

“No competition can be held without helpers and volunteers whose time and effort throughout the year can never be under-estimated, but West Cheshire AC needs that trend to continue.

“West Cheshire AC has more qualified officials than any other club in Cheshire and we are in a great position now for those individuals to pass on their knowledge and experience to volunteers this weekend.

“County officials secretary, Alan Morris, who was officiating at the recent World ParaAthletics and World Track and Field Championships in London, wants to see West Cheshire AC members, their parents, and friends of the club grabbing an opportunity this Sunday to learn more about the sport by attending an officials taster session.

“The event will take place from 10.30am when volunteers can gather and decide whether they would like to experience being a starter, a marksman, timekeeper, track judge, or field judge.

“The volunteers will then be offered the chance to help out from 12 noon on Sunday when West Cheshire AC will host the final round of the Cheshire Track and Field League.

“When Alan proposed the initiative which was sparked by England Athletics publicising an online Team Personal Best project to encourage more volunteers to support clubs, I fully backed the idea, but we now need people to step forward and receive all the help that West Cheshire AC are providing.

“I think it’s a superb opportunity for volunteers and helpers to taste what life is like as an official and I really hope the initiative proves a big success.”

Further details about the Officials Taster Day can be received from Dennis Wall on 07968643038.
