Press report: 2020 vision for club after healthy year

SEVERAL West Cheshire Athletic Club members are toasting a memorable year.

Emma Howe, George Hyde, Laura Turley, Olivia Montez-Brown, Evie Tipping, Ewan Bradley, Maddi Mercer, Imogen Pughe, and Harriet Wheeler all completed the year with UK rankings featured in Athletics Weekly magazine.

And the Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based outfit is looking forward to hosting the Cheshire Track and Field Championships in the New Year as well as fixtures in North of England League Division One, Youth Development Under 13/Under 15 League North West Premier Division, Youth Development Under 17/Under 20 League North West Division One, Cheshire League, and English Schools Cup.

Howe achieved a throw of 45.27m to earn third spot in the under 20 women’s javelin rankings and 12th place in the women’s overall rankings for 2019.

Hyde powered his way to third position in the under 20 men’s 6kg shot put rankings with 17.97m, and is ranked 15th in the men’s list after a 15.50m put with the men’s weight.

Turley posted 54.66 seconds at Valence, France, for 38th spot in the women’s 400m rankings having won the Welsh Indoor title earlier in the year.

Montez-Brown is ranked 14th in the women’s heptathlon after compiling 5,260 points at a competition held at Kingsvill, Texas, and is 39th in the women’s 100m hurdles list after posting a time of 14.18 seconds at Duluth, Minnesota.

Tipping is ranked fourth in the women’s 4kg hammer after hitting 45.32m at Ellesmere Port Sports Village in July, and is 10th in the 3kg hammer having powered her way to 51.56m a month earlier at Birmingham.

Bradley is 44th in the men’s 110m hurdles rankings (5th man under 20) after clocking 15.3 seconds on the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Track in July, as well as 16th man under 20 in the decathlon.

Mercer achieved top-10 under 13 girls rankings in no fewer than four events – fourth in the 75m (9.98 seconds), sixth in the long jump (4.92m), and 10th in both the 100m (13.05) and 200m (27.1).

Pughe clocked 40.25 seconds for sixth spot in the under 15 girls 300m rankings, and Wheeler powered her way to ninth place in the under 13 girls javelin rankings with 30.17m.

A TOTAL of 67 youngsters participated in the annual West Cheshire AC Christmas Fun Morning held at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Saturday which comprised of scoring points for bean bag throwing, shove ha’penny, hoopla with cones, throwing a ball into bins, target javelin, darts. skittles, quoits, blow football, roll the ball target, and archer throw.

The age group winners were Niamh Rowlands, Darcy Redmond, Florence Mercer, Evelyn Pine, Sam Archer, Ben Walker, Lewis Morris, Eleanor Neve, George Holbrook, Matthew Jones, and Cameron Morrison.

FORTHCOMING fixtures include the Essar Chester Round The Walls Race on Boxing Day from the Roodee (10.30am start), the Cheshire AA Cross Country Championships at Knights Grange, Winsford, on Saturday, January 4, (11am, start), and a Sale Harriers Indoor Track and Field Open Meeting on Sunday, January 5, (10am start).
