Press Report: WCAC Win National Title at Home

WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club has secured the first-ever All England Marathon Team Championship title.

The purple-vested squad of Eloise Eccles, Keely Smith, Rhiannon Robson, Jon Park, Steve Fernyhough, Michael Young, and Ian Gloyne-Phillips grabbed glory at the event which was incorporated into the Chester Marathon.

Eccles clocked three hours 27 minutes 11 seconds, ahead of team mates Smith (3:32:39), and Robson (3:49:46), supported by Park who was 24th overall in 2:46:41, followed by Fernyhough (53rd in 2:52:22), Young (60th in 2:54:25), and Gloyne-Phillips (3:02:46).

Other West Cheshire AC finishers included Wullie McGarrell (3:13:45), Danny Paddock (3:17:48), Nick Duffy (3:21:44), Andrew Cooper (3:25:40), Andy Carter (3:32:28), Rob Boggild (3:34:26), David Irving (3:34:55), Jack Gannon (3:43:19), Mark Davies (3:54:14), Tony Woodall (3:59:32), Mark Gallagher (3:59:28), and Stephen Ball (4:04:44).

Tom Cable posted 1:58:25 for 40th spot in the Chester Metric Marathon, the first of 13 West Cheshire AC members to finish who included Julian Tegg (2:09:18), Ian Ackroyd (2:15:13), Matthew Stanley (2:16:14), Cathryn Whalley (2:28:21), Brygida Gorecka (2:33:03), Sarah Hibbert (2:35:49), Amy Mills (2:37:00), Isabel Robertson (2:42:18), Sarah Hughes (2:42:19), Michael Dennis (2:43:57), Sharon Dodd (2:45:48), and Karen Waugh (3:23:56).

JOSEPH MORRISON of West Cheshire AC won the under 20 men’s title and finished second overall with a time of 30:15 at the opening round of the North Wales Cross Country League held at Wrexham.

Morrison was followed home in the men’s race by his brother, Paul (eighth under 20 man and 42nd overall in 34:23), first over-55 man Neil Hershaw (34:47), fifth over-50 man Andrew Clague (34:57), Richard Hayes (36:24), Steven King (36:46), Andy Carter (37:20), and Dave Tiernan (third over-55 man in 37:28), to earn the senior men fourth team position and the veteran men sixth team spot.

Lucia Pyne was fifth in the under 17 women’s age group and 17th overall with a time of 25:37, backed-up by team mates Kerry Riley (26:11), Anest Muller (26:56), Ellie Robinson (27:04), Clare Mallon (27:50), Ellen McMahon (29:25), Debra Bemand (29:41), Angela Tegg (29:50), and Alex Duffey (32:56) to earn West Cheshire’s senior women and veteran women fourth team spot.

The next round of the North Wales Cross Country League takes place at Fox Hills, Colwyn Bay, on Saturday, October 19.

CONNOR DAVIES JONES and Ethan Gilgeours combined to earn an under 15 boys team victory for West Cheshire AC at the opening round of the North West Indoor Sportshall Athletics League at Crewe.

West Cheshire AC’s under 13 girls won their team competition against Crewe and Nantwich, Macclesfield, Wespa, and Handforth and Wilmslow.

West Cheshire AC’s under 11 boys finished second in their team event, while the under 13 boys were third, and the under 11 girls finished fourth.

West Cheshire AC will host the second round of the North West Indoor Sportshall Athletics League at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Sunday, November 10.

ELLIE ROBINSON and Tony Woodall won the inaugural West Cheshire Off Road Summer League ladies and men’s titles respectively with Alex Duffey and Andy Carter were winners of the persistence trophies.

HELEN TOOLEY of West Cheshire AC won the over-45 women’s Throwathon title at the Wrexham Final Fling Competition and was joined at the event by under 13 girls throwathon winner Harriet Wheeler and runner-up Kara Stoll.

FIXTURES this weekend include the first round of the Manchester Area Cross Country League on Saturday at Wythenshawe Park (12.15pm start), and the Liverpool and District Cross Country League first round on Saturday at Sherdley Park (11am start), while the Borders Road Running League first round is at Caernarfon, on Sunday (11am start).

The Chester Primary Schools Cross Country Championships will take place at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Monday, October 14 (4pm start).
