JAMES McMAHON scored top marks to win the North West Schools Combined Events Championship title.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club all-rounder starred for Cheshire at Blackburn`s Witton Park to book his place in September`s English Schools Senior Boys Decathlon Championship scheduled to be held at Exeter.

McMahon posted 5,708 points after clocking 11.3 seconds in the 100m, long jumping 6.26m, hitting 11.97m in the shot put, clearing 1.73m in the high jump, and rounding the 400m in 54.8 seconds on the first day.

He opening his final day by posting 15.5 seconds in the 110m hurdles, hitting 32.62m in the discus, clearing 3.10m in the pole vault, launching the javelin 40.05m, and posting 5:21.4 in the 1500m.

West Cheshire duo Abi Pawlett and Emily Misantoni teamed up in the junior girls pentathlon.

Pawlett secured 2,775 points for sixth spot after clocking a new pb of 11.7 seconds in the 75m hurdles, hitting 9.44m in the shot, clearing a new pb of 1.54m in the high jump, long jumping 4.79m, and rounding the 800m in 2:56.0.

Misantoni registered 2,601 points for eighth position after posting 12.1 seconds in the 75m hurdles, hitting 7.92m in the shot, clearing 1.45m in the high jump, long jumping 3.96m, and clocking 2:31.1 in the 800m.

Will Rattray was the other West Cheshire member in action, finishing 14th with 2,852 points in the intermediate boys octathlon.

Rattray long jumped 4.67m, spun the discus to a mark of 34.17m, hit 12.07m in the javelin, clocked 58.1 seconds in the 400m, posted 17.8 seconds in the 100m hurdles, cleared 1.37m in the high jump, hit 8.10m in the shot, and clocked 5:34.4 in the 1500m.

WEST CHESHIRE remain top of the Under 17 and Under 20 Youth Development Track and Field League after finishing third at the penultimate round held at Oldham.

Maisie Tipping headed the club`s charge at Oldham by securing success in the under 17 womens 300m (43.2 seconds), 300m hurdles (47.5), and then combing with Lauren Dimbylow, Emma Howe and Sophie Percival for a winning 4x100m relay time of 54.7.

Issy Clarke won the under 17 womens 1500m (5:11.6), while her sister, Katie, rounded the under 20 womens 3,000m for victory in 10:34.9, and Isobel Griffin Morris won the under 17 womens discus with 40.73m.

Daniel Berg and George Hyde teamed up for success in the under 20 mens hammer and shot events, while Franklin Onomerike won the under 20 mens high jump with 1.55m, alongside 3,000m winner Harri Britton, and B 800m winner Joseph Morrison.

Other important West Cheshire team members included Sophie Carter, Charlie Douglas, Ewan Brandon, Jake Gibson, Alex Kearns, Ethan Greenland, Patrick Tait, and Rory Wilson.

DAVE BISH of West Cheshire won his over 70 age group in a time of 52:52 at the Colshaw Hall 10k Road Race.

He was joined at the event by club mates Andrew Carter (sixth V45 in 38:45), Ellie Robinson (fifth FV40 in 44:49), and Peter Smith (266th in 49:49).

ROSEMARY PRICE of West Cheshire won her over 65 women`s age group with a time of 51:35 at the Penny Lane 10k Road Race.

The Christleton to Waverton Fun Run takes place on Thursday from Christleton Primary School (7pm start).

Fixtures this weekend include the Northern Track and Field League Division One match being hosted by West Cheshire at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Sunday, and the annual Cheshire against Merseyside Year Seven Schools Athletics Meeting will be held at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Monday (5pm start).

SEVERAL West Cheshire Athletic Club members have enhanced their prospects of representing Cheshire in Gateshead next month.

Ewan Bradley, George Hyde, Ethan Milligan, Isobel Griffin-Morris, Emma Howe, and sisters Evie and Maisie Tipping all produced impressive displays for their club and county with the English Schools Track and Field Championships scheduled to take place on July 8 and 9.

Bradley cleared 2.60m in the pole vault while representing Cheshire at Birmingham`s Alexander Stadium in the Mason Trophy Inter-Counties Schools Championships.

Hyde won the shot put with a new personal best of 14.95m, while Milligan cleared 1.85m for fourth spot in the high jump, Griffin-Morris spun the discus to a mark of 38.55m for second spot, and Howe finished second in the javelin with 41.51m.

Evie powered the hammer to 37.24m for second position, and Maisie clocked 46.77 seconds for third place in the 300m hurdles.

Other West Cheshire members in action at Birmingham included Sonny Dean, who posted a new 800m personal best of 2:10:65; Anna Crayston who long-jumped to a new under 15 girls personal best of 4.99m; Abi Pawlett who clocked a new under 15 girls 75m hurdles best of 11.86 seconds; Will Scott, who hit a new under 15 boys personal best of 31.68m in the under 15 boys discus; Jac Goodall, who rounded the under 17 mens 1500m steeplechase in 5:18.0; Lauren Dimbylow, who cleared 1.46m in the under 17 womens high jump; and Daniel Berg, who hit 45.14m in the under 17 mens hammer.

Several youngsters headed to Darlington on the following day to help West Cheshire finish second in the penultimate round of the Youth Development Under 13/Under 15 Track and Field League Premier Division.

Crayston achieved a memorable leg in the under 15 girls 4x300m relay to bring the team from fifth to third place, while Lauren Jones cleared 1.70m to earn valuable points in the under 13 girls pole vault.

Abi Pawlett (12.1) and Emily Misantoni (12.6) teamed up to score a double success in the under 15 girls 75m hurdles.

They were backed up by Harriet Alexander, Jess Hall, Evie Tipping, Tamsin O`Keefe, Molly Jones, Lily Moorhouse, Raimi Harrison, and Lily O`Gorman.

Maximum points were delivered by Will Scott in the discus and B javelin, Adam Howe in the B discus, Harvey Culverhouse in the B 100m, and by Michael Ozoemelam in the B 200m.

Jacob Simmonds won the 300m and B 200m, while Sion Roberts clocked a new 1500m personal best of 4:38.4, and they were supported by Matthew Webb, Harvey Tegg, Charlie Potts, and Daniel Pond.

Michael Maxwell cleared a winning height of 1.33m in the under 13 boys high jump, and clocked a winning time of 15.1 seconds in the B 75m hurdles. Uzezi Onomerike, Dylan Bugg, Isaac Tait, Gabriel Ford, Henry Robinson, Ethan Butler, Leon Moorhouse, and Ivor Smith all provided back up in Maxwell`s age group.

Imogen Pughe, Lara Battersby, Ella Dimbylow, Ambre Richards, Lucia Pyne, Jodi Bemond, Nia Forshaw, Ceris Gaffney, and Stephanie Jones combined for the under 13 girls squad.

SOPHIE PERCIVAL powered her way to a bronze medal in the javelin competition at the England Under 23 Championships at Bedford.

OLIVIA MONTEZ-BROWN ended her university season in America at the NCAA
National Finals in Bradenton, Florida, where she produced a new heptathlon personal best and university record of 5,254 points, (100m hurdles – 14.37; high jump – 1.61m; shot – 10.45m; 200m – 25.56 (pb); long jump – 6.08m; javelin – 32.53m (pb); and 800m – 2:22.77 (pb). The West Cheshire all-rounder then achieved 5.96m and 6.08m in the long jump to break the university record she already held.

ROSEMARY PRICE of West Cheshire won the over 65 lady age group prize with a time of 51:41 at the Mersey Tunnel 10k Road Race.

ANDY CARTER, Anest Muller and Antony Wood represented West Cheshire at the Tattenhall Tough Team Mixed Race and finished third with a time of 72:56.

Alex Staniforth, David Tait and Ian Gloyne-Phillips finished seventh in the men`s team event, and other West Cheshire finishers included Dave Alexander, Mark Davies, Ellie Robinson, Lisa Davies, Clare Mallon, Lorraine McFaul, and Peter Smith.

FERGUS GARLAND of West Cheshire won the under 11s Henri Lloyd Abersoch 3k Beach Race in a time of 13:13.

WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club have taken another big step towards promotion.

The Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based outfit`s under 17 and under 20 squad secured a team success at the second round of the Youth Development Track and Field League held at Blackburn`s Witton Park.

Maisie Tipping, Emma Howe, Lauren Dimbylow and Alice Barnsley combined to celebrate victory in the under 17 womens 4x100m relay.

Tipping grabbed glory with a new 300m hurdles personal best before adding valuable points from the 200m and 300m, alongside Howe who delivered success in the javelin, Dimbylow who won the 80m hurdles and high jump, Keane Harrison who won the B javelin and B 300m, and Beth McMahon.

Georgia Barlow continued her impressive form on the back of a double success at the Cheshire Championships by winning the under 20 womens 100m at Blackburn.

She was backed up by Georgina Moulton who won the discus, and by Katie Clarke who secured success in both the 3000m and in her 1500m steeplechase debut.

George Hyde powered his way to victory in the under 17 mens shot put alongside B winner and team mate Will Rattray.

Ethan Milligan catapulted his way to top spot in the high jump alongside B winner Franklin Onomerike.

David Dentith celebrated success in the B 400m, while Christy Mageean finished second in the 800m, and the other important under 17 points scorers included Ewan Brandon, Jake Gibson, Alex Mason, Harri Britton, Josh Ford, Rory Willson, and Ethan Greenland.

Mageean teamed up with Brandon, Dentith and Gibson for victory in the 4x100m relay.

Zac Barnsley and James McMahon wrapped up West Cheshire`s impressive performance by contributing valuable points in the under 20 men’s events.

ABI PAWLETT of West Cheshire AC clocked a new under 15 girls 75m hurdles personal best of 11.92 seconds at Trafford’s Bank Holiday Monday Meeting to better her previous best time of 12.18, and long jumped 4.89m.

PAM ACKROYD of West Cheshire AC celebrated a huge new personal best time at the Birkenhead Park 5km parkrun. Ackroyd, who has been training hard with West Cheshire AC members at Thursday evening sessions on the Ellesmere Port Sports Village track, posted 24 minutes 37 seconds which improved her previous best by 77 seconds.

Her son, Ethan, also clocked a new personal best time of 16:59 at Birkenhead Park to finish fourth overall and first in his age category.

ANEST MULLER was the first lady finisher at the Ellesmere Port 5k parkrun. The West Cheshire AC race ace posted 20 minutes 46 seconds, ahead of team mates Rob Freeman (10th in 21:18), Liam Farrell (11th in 21:26), Imogen Pughe (second lady in 21:42), Vince Hodges (15th in 22:24), Clare Mallon (third lady in 23:19), Rosemary Rogers (sixth lady in 24:22), Peter Smith (36th in 24:24), Harvey Tegg (37th in 24:29), Paul Morrison (40th in 24:55), and Dave Hough (55th in 27:41).

CHRISTLETON, The Queen’s School, and Neston all secured success at the West Cheshire AC Schools Track and Field Cup competition.

Christleton won the combined boys and girls competition with 186 points, ahead of Neston with 162 points and third-placed Whitby with 144 points.

Queen`s School won the girls event with 127 points, ahead of Christleton with 113, and Whitby with 85.

And Neston won the boys competition with 85 points, ahead of runners-up Christleton on 73, and third-placed Ellesmere Port Catholic High with 68.

THE first round of the Deestriders Off Road Grand Prix will be held on Thursday, (June 2), from Tata Sports and Social Club, Shotton (7.30pm start).

Other rounds are scheduled to take place at the same venue on Thursday, July 7 (7.30pm), Thursday, August 4, (7.30pm), and Friday, September 2 (7pm).

ANEST MULLER and Lisa Davies demonstrated record-breaking form at the Christleton 5k Road Race.

The West Cheshire duo smashed age group club records, with Muller clocking a new over-35 womens best of 19:56 for eighth spot in her age category, and Davies posting 21:41 for a new over-45 womens best to secure third position in her age category.

They were supported by Ellie Robinson who was eighth in her over-40 age group with 20:43, Anne-Marie Tait (seventh over-45 lady in 24:26), and Kay Hayes (11th over-35 lady in 24:28).

West Cheshire AC under 20 year old distance runner Christy Mageean clocked 16:47 seconds to secure 69th position, just eight places in front of club mate Dave Alexander who achieved 16:59 for eighth spot in his over-45 age group.

Rob Little continued his impressive form on the back of the Chester Half Marathon, posting 17:15 for 94th position at Christleton, clocking an identical time to Mark Davies who finished 100th.

Graham Wells completed the flat and fast course in 17:47 for 129th position, and was backed up by Ian Gloyne-Phillips (142nd in 17:56), Andrew Clague (154th in 18:19), and Andy Carter (166th in 18:28).

Dave Bish won his over-70 age group category with 23:25, ahead of Brian Beattie, who was fourth in the same age group with 26:01.

EWAN BRADLEY catapulted his way to a winning height of 3.05m in the under 15 boys pole vault at South Leeds Stadium. Bradley achieved the English Schools qualifying standard, and was backed up by team mate Adam Howe who won the B event with 1.80m.

Bradley also added points in the 80m hurdles, and was supported in his age group by Harvey Culverhouse, Michael Ozoemelam, Sam Paton, Jacob Simmonds, Sonny Dean, Harvey Tegg, Sion Roberts, Charlie Potts, Matthew Webb, Will Scott, and Daniel Pond.

Dylan Bugg, Isaac Tait, Michael Maxwell, and Ethan Butler all celebrated success in the under 13 boys competition.

Bugg won the 800m, while Tait and Butler combined for A and B 1500m victories, and Maxwell won the high jump and B 75m hurdles.

The quartet were backed up by Uzezi Onomerike, Gabrial Ford, Henry Robinson, Leon Moorhouse, and Ivor Smith.

Evie Tipping and Raimi Harrison delivered a double success for West Cheshire in the under 15 girls hammer. The duo were supported by Chloe Mount, Harriet Alexander, Emily Misantoni, Tamsin O’Keefe, Molly Jones, and Lauren Jones.

The hardworking West Cheshire AC official was recognised by Cheshire County Athletic Association for his contribution over many years at cross-country, road running and track and field competitions.

WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club members pocketed 35 gold medals at the Cheshire Track and Field Championships.

The Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based outfit impressed at the annual two-day fixture held at Macclesfield where they also secured 13 silver medals and 16 bronze awards.

Isaac Tait celebrated a double success story with victories in the under 13 boys 800m (2:24.44) and 1500m (4:55:83), alongside double winner Abi Pawlett who claimed the under 15 girls high jump (1-54m) and shot put (8.96m) titles.

Dave McKay grabbed glory in the senior men`s discus (32.30m), shot put (11.29m), hammer (45.41m), and javelin (52.73m), while James McMahon scored a hat-trick of titles from the under 20 men`s long jump (6.45m), shot put (10.80m), and 110m hurdles (15.39 seconds).

Ethan Milligan catapulted his way to a personal best of 1.92m to win the under 17 mens high jump and added a victory 24 hours later in the triple jump (11.30m), while Will Scott powered his way to top spot in the under 15 boys javelin (30.25m) and discus (27.93m).

Evie Tipping threw the under 15 girls hammer to a winning distance of 37.09m, while Emma Howe launched the under 17 womens javelin to a winning mark of 37.39m, George Hyde hit 14.43m for success in the under 17 mens shot put, and Sophie Percival nailed 39.81m for victory in the under 20 womens javelin.

Katie Clarke rounded the under 20 womens 3,000m in a winning time of 10:48:33, and Georgia Barlow blasted her way to success in the under 20 womens 200m in 25.95 seconds, while Isobel Griffin Morris spun the under 17 womens discus to a winning mark of 37.69m.

Ethan Butler cleared 1.25m for victory in the under 13 boys high jump, while Lara Battersby won the under 13 girls discus with 13.34m, and Lauren Dimbylow clocked 13.87 seconds for success in the under 17 womens 80m hurdles.

Matthew Pagan (49.37), Mark Hearn (51.37) and Shona Valetine (60.03) won the under 20, senior men`s and senior women`s 400m titles, while Sonny Dean was crowned under 15 boys 800m champion with a time of 2:14:53, and Richard Farley clocked 4:19.62 for success in the senior mens 1500m.

Daniel Berg (43.50m) and Debra Erskine (22.96m) won the under 17 mens and senior womens hammer competitions, while Alan Littler cleared 1-65m for victory in the senior men`s high jump, Ewan Bradley achieved a winning height of 2-80m in the under 15 boys pole vault, and Danielle Erskine long jumped to success with 4.90m in the senior women`s event.

ROBERT LITTLE headed West Cheshire AC`s charge at the Chester Half Marathon, clocking a time of one hour 20 minutes 32 seconds for 43rd position.

The first woman was Julie Briscoe of Wakefield District Harriers & AC who finished in a time of 1:17:21 followed by Rachel Doherty of Higham Harriers (1:18:07) and Joasia Zakrzewski of Durham City Harriers & AC (1:20:52).

WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club produced a solid start to life in the top flight.

The Ellesmere Port Sports Village-based senior men`s and women`s squad finished fourth in their first ever North of England Track and Field League Division One appearance.

Sophie Percival, Ethan Milligan, and Dave McKay all celebrated individual victories at the fixture staged in blistering hot conditions at Wakefield.

Percival, a student at the University of Chester, launched the javelin to a winning mark of 39.94m and hit a new shot put personal best of 11.31m alongside B winner Kelly Baker (10.30m).

Milligan elevated himself to a winning clearance of 1-90m in the high jump, and McKay threw the javelin to a winning distance of 54.33m.

Andrew Clague won the B 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 11 minutes 23.9 seconds and provided back-up for Tom Booth who finished third overall in 10:56.5.

Booth also clocked 17:58.2 in the 5000m alongside Clague who clocked 18:17.1, and Booth added important points from the pole vault (2.40m), 400m hurdles (71.6) and B 110m hurdles (22.4).

Zac Barnsley sprinted to times of 11.9 and 25.9 seconds in the 100m and 200m alongside James McMahon in the B 100m (11.9) and Liam Davoren in the B 200m (25.4).

Alex Kearns clocked 54.5 in the 400m alongside Alan Littler who posted 57.6 in the B race.

Richard Farley rounded the 800m in 2:02.7 and the B 1500m in 4:56.4), while Ethan Greenland clocked a new personal 800m best of 2:14.0 in the B race, and posted 4:39.2 in the 1500m.

McKay, who secured good points from the 110m hurdles, hammer, discus, triple jump and shot, was supported by Richard Stocker who was second in the B shot (10.93m), third in the discus (36.91m), and third in the B hammer (32.31m).

McMahon (6.39m) and Milligan (5.63m) combined in the men`s long jump, and Milligan triple-jumped 11.59m.

Alice McMahon headlined in the short sprints, with times of 12.8 and 26.0 alongside Shona Valentine (13.3) and Georgia Barlow (27.0), before Valentine (61.8) and Maisie Tipping (65.1) teamed up in the 400m.

Katie Clarke posted a new 3000m personal best of 10:51.8, alongside Ellie Robinson (12:22.5), who also rounded the 800m in a personal best 2:35.0. Lisa Davies earned valuable points in running times of 2:48.2 in the 800m and 5:48.5 in the 1500m.

Alice Jennings clocked 70.1 in the 400m hurdles alongside B winner Danielle Erskine (76.2), and the duo combined in the 100m hurdles with times of 17.3 and 17.8 respectively, as well as in the long jump with Erskine nailing 4.97m and Jennings 4.44m, and in the triple jump with Erskine hitting 9.46m, and Jennings managing 9.23m.

Jennings cleared 1.55m in the high jump alongside Tipping (1.40m), while Debra Erskine hit 24.31m in the hammer alongside Percival (21.19m) who also achieved 27.07m in the discus.

McMahon, Valentine, Barlow and Danielle Erskine then teamed up for a winning time of 50.1 in the 4x100m relay.

MARK DAVIES of West Cheshire won the Delamere 5k parkrun in a new personal best time of 18:31, ahead of clubmates Alex Staniforth (fifth in 19:17), Rory Willson (13th in 20:05), Tamsin O\’Keefe (second lady in 21:53), Cara Henshall (fourth lady in a new pb of 22:52), Lily Moorhouse (22nd lady in 27:41), Ellie Finn (44th lady in 29:13), and Leon Moorhouse (298th in 39:01).

Vince Hodges (12th in 22:11) was West Cheshire\’s first finisher at the Ellesmere Port 5k ParkRun, ahead of Harvey Tegg (14th in 22:14), Liam Farrell (15th in 22:15), Louis Tegg (28th in 23:57), Tony Kennedy (30th in 24:04), Rosemary Rogers (fifth lady in 25:14), and Dave Hough (47th in 27:10).

ALEX STANIFORTH will provide an illustrated talk and book signing this Friday about his expeditions to Mount Everest.

The Chester-born adventurer will present the gripping true story of his journey, from his hometown to the top of the world – Mount Everest.

The long distance runner, aged 20, faced obstacles through childhood such as epilepsy, stammering, mental health problems and bullying, to eventually become part of the two biggest disasters in Everest history.

Both attempts to reach the summit ended in tragedy with the 2014 avalanche, and last year, where he narrowly survived the avalanche triggered by the Nepal earthquake.

His debut book ICEFALL, endorsed by Bear Grylls, tells an inspirational account of overcoming adversity and this is your chance to hear the experiences first-hand and get a signed copy.

The talk and book signing, being hosted by West Cheshire Athletic Club, will take place at Cheshire County Sports Club, Plas Newton Lane, Upton By Chester, CH2 1PR, this Friday, (May 13), with doors opening at 6.30pm, the talk starting at 6.45pm, and the event scheduled to finish at 8.30pm.

The cost of the event is £5 (inclusive of hot drinks and refreshments), which is payable on the door.
