TWO West Cheshire Athletic Club teenagers have been named on the England Athletics Youth Talent Programme.
Throwers Kara Stoll and Harriet Wheeler, and their coach, Dave McKay, have been selected to take the first step on the Talent pathway designed to meet the needs of identified, talented English athletes/para athletes aged between 16 and 18 years of age.
Kara is ranked sixth in the UK for her under 17 age group in hammer throwing after achieving a personal best of 49.52m at last month’s Final Fling Competition at Wrexham’s Queensway Stadium.
Kara is the reigning Cheshire Clubs’ and Schools County champion and won the Inter County Schools title at the Mason Trophy in June at Stoke’s Northwood Stadium.
And Harriet is ranked third in the UK for her under 17 age group in javelin after producing a throw of 37.86m in her only javelin competition appearance of the year at last month’s Final Fling Competition following her recovery from an injury.
Last year, her first year in the under 17 age group, saw Harriet represent England in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago where she pocketed a silver medal with a throw of 51.50m, and won the England Athletics Championship title, the Schools International title, as well as Cheshire County Clubs’ and Schools’ titles with Championship Best Performances of 47.21m and 50.05m respectively.
The Youth Talent Programme focuses on developing a dual career for the athlete/para athlete through fulfilling their potential within the sport and also in their education and employability. It is supported by London Marathon Events and TASS.
The programme aims to complement club provision and add value to the athlete/para athlete and coach plan to help develop a broad range of skills, abilities and behaviours needed for senior success, delivered through practical training sessions with like-minded athletes in their event group, performance support sessions and workshops. There is also the opportunity for coaches to access additional qualifications, mentoring and support delivered through the England Athletics Youth Talent Programme coaches.
For those athletes in full-time education the Youth Talent Programme will allow the athlete/para athlete to gain an academic support qualification (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) allowing progression either to further / higher education or to gain employment within a related field.
Those athletes/para athletes not in full-time education will be able to access the Youth Talent Programme content and use skills gained from their training to support their personal development and progression without the qualification.

REMOVING 1M RUNNING SHOES FROM LANDFILLThere are in the region of 18 billion pairs of running shoes sold in the world every year. That’s the equivalent to 2 pairs of running shoes per person on earth. Yet, there are millions who have no shoes and suffer terribly from sole diseases. ‘Jog on Again’ believe some 30+ million pairs of shoes end up in landfill every year and many of these shoes have a lot of life left in them!

The Club would like to do our bit and help ‘Jog on Again’ get those shoes out to those who need them in over 15 destinations around the world.

So, look in that cupboard, garage, under the bed. They may be old to you, but you can give them another chance with someone else.
There will be a collection box at the track for you to donate old trainers or spikes – no need to clean them up, we’ll take them just as they are!  Of course if anyone in the club feels they could make use of shoes someone else has donated, then feel free to help yourself from the collection box – you are still doing your bit to help save them from landfill. Thank you for your support.

TRACK SPIKES FOR SALE

Members wanting track spikes for their shoes can purchase packets of 12 for Β£2 from the Club Container Office at Club Training Sessions.

CLUB KIT

Woollen Club Bobble Hats and Purple Club hoodies have been delivered, so please come and buy your bobble hat (Β£15) and hoodie (Β£20 each) at the Track Office Container after training on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 8pm.

Meanwhile, Club members can also access an Online Club Shop selling a range of items. Please look at this link using WCAC2023 as the password.

PLEASE ID CLOTHING WHEN TRAINING AT THE EPSV TRACK

Can parents please write the name of their youngster on any clothing they wear at the EPSV track so that any training tops or coats are identied if left at the site. And all parents/guardians of youngsters attending track training sessions are reminded to collect them from the track, not from the car park. The club wants to ensure everyone stays safe and that every youngster safely leaves every track training session.
We also ask that all youngsters attending track training sessions should bring along warm clothing, preferably waterproofs, hat, gloves, and a bottle of water.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT TRAINING SESSIONS – PLEASE GET INVOLVED!

The Club needs helpers to register members on the Tablet at the EPSV Track Office before training sessions at the Ellesmere Port Sports Village Athletics Track, and volunteers are needed to assist our coaches to help deliver training sessions. If you can help, please email Dennis at: [email protected]
