Press Report: Youngsters Tackle Cross-country
A TOTAL of 130 youngsters tackled the latest round of the West Cheshire AC Schools Cross-country Race Series.
Arianwen Setters and Leon Betteridge ensured Hoole won the year three girls and year six boys races respectively on Saturday at Ellesmere Port Sports Village.
Arianwen finished ahead of Upton Heath pair Penny Sharps-Green and Darcey Rose, while Leon was 46 seconds clear of second placed Leo Ravenscroft (Childer Thornton) and St Martin’s Academy’s Jacob Senn in third spot.
Brothers, Aubrey and Caleb Newman, secured Acresfield success in the year four and year five boys races, with Aubrey finishing ahead of Niall Betteridge (Hoole) and Josh Barlow-Ashworth (Newton), and Caleb ahead of Jack Arnold (Upton Heath) and Zaan Brown (Belgrave).
Blake Robinson and Henry Glynn secured a one-two finish for Farndon in the year three boys race ahead of Otto Holmes (Newton) in third spot.
Abby Gamble (Guilden Sutton) won the year four girls race 16 seconds ahead of Poppy Tromans (Newton) and Nancy Kellard (Sutton Green).
Felicity Snowden (King’s) triumphed in the year five girls race, just four seconds ahead of Alice Roberts Paige (Hoole) and Oldfield’s Saskia Keresturova.
Poppy McKenna (King’s) won the year six girls race nine seconds ahead of nearest challengers Elsie Jones (Willaston) and Childer Thornton’s Marie-Ange Robson.
Nia Manson (Bishop Heber) won the year seven girls race ahead of Rose Sheppard (Helsby), while Upton duo Sidney Carr and Finley Stewart finished first and second in the year seven boys race.
Lauren Higgins (Queen’s) won the year eight girls race 55 seconds clear of Poppy Coates (West Kirby) and Maya Jennings (King’s).
And Dylan Gledhill (Christleton) won the year eight boys race ahead of Elliot Quaglierini (Upton).
The final round of the West Cheshire AC Schools Race Series will take place at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Saturday, December 9 (10am start).
COSETTE WEARDEN finished third in the under 17 women’s race at Park Hall, Stoke on Trent, in the latest round of the North Staffs Cross Country League, where Joe Massey also represented West Cheshire AC, clocking 59:20 in the senior men’s race.
SARAH HIBBERT celebrated a new five miles personal best time of 39 minutes 48 seconds on Sunday at the Preston Five Miles Road Race, alongside Brian Wright who clocked 39:46.
ANDY CARTER was the first of seven West Cheshire AC members to complete the Conwy Half Marathon, posting 1:33:55 for 10th spot in his over-50 age group.
He finished ahead of Stephen Hillier (1:39:03), Tony Sangha (1:46:39), Stuart Hague (1:57:39), Julian and Angela Tegg (2:03:43), and Cathryn Whalley (2:07:58).
FIXTURES this weekend include the UK Cross Challenge at Sefton Park, Liverpool, this Saturday, and the North Wales Junior and Senior Cross Country League third round at Boreatton Park, Baschurch, Shrewsbury, on Saturday; and an Under 11s and Under 13s Indoor Combined Events Competition takes place on Sunday, at Deeside College, Connah’s Quay.
