Press Report: Youngsters Shine On and Off Road

CARYS ROBERTS will represent the North West in London later this month.

The talented West Cheshire Athletic Club youngster has been selected to run for the region in the London Mini Marathon which takes place on Sunday, April 28and is the official British Athletics three miles road championships for young athletes aged between 11 and 17.

Roberts has produced a string of impressive cross country performances during the winter months, including a second-placed finish at the Northern Championships at Pontefract.

And her achievements have merited 18th spot in the under 13 girls UK Cross Country ranking list published recently by Athletics Weekly magazine.

SION ROBERTS headed West Cheshire AC’s charge at the latest round of the Borders Road Running League hosted by Buckley Runners.

Roberts finished 13th after negotiating the five miles course, supported by purple-vested team mates Bradley Spurdens (39th), Graham Wells (47th), Jac Goodall (50th), Dave Alexander (56th), Mark Davies (58th), Paul Morrison (61st), John Parlevliet (67th), Andy Carter (72nd), Andrew Clague (75th), Claire Harris (105th), Patrick Tait (127th), Ellie Robinson (146th), Dave Tiernan (192nd), Clare Mallon (211th), Mark Gallagher (221st), Rory Willson (254th), Tony Kennedy (301st), and Dave Brierley (325th).

The final round of the Borders Road Running League will take place on Wednesday, April 24, at Ffrith, Prestatyn.

JESSICA LARK and Luke Parker secured podium places at the annual Cheshire v Merseyside Schools Year Seven Cross Country Match hosted by West Cheshire Athletic Club at Ellesmere Port Sports Village.

The West Cheshire AC duo represented Cheshire over a two miles course, with Lark finishing second and Parker posting third spot.

Other West Cheshire AC members in action included Ruby Carlile (11th in the girls race) and Thomas Wilde (15th in the boys race).

KEELY SMITH represented West Cheshire AC at the Conwy Marathon and posted a new over 35 ladies age group club record of three hours 20 minutes 28 seconds.

JOSEPH MORRISON clocked a new under 20 men’s 5k club record time of 16:29 for fourth spot at the Wirral Seaside 5k Race held at Leasowe, ahead of brother Paul (12th in 17:08), and Steve Fernyhough (17th in 17:20).

WEST CHESHIRE AC is organising the Essar Chester Spring Five Miles Road Race on Wednesday, April 10, from Cheshire Sports Club, Upton, (7pm start).

WEST CHESHIRE AC will start their Northern Track and Field League Division One campaign at Witton Park, Blackburn, on Sunday, May 19, before travelling to Wigan for round two on Sunday, June 16, hosting round three at Ellesmere Port Sports Village on Sunday, July 2, and travelling to Wakefield for the final round on Saturday, August 10.

WEST CHESHIRE AC will host two rounds of this season’s Cheshire Track and Field League at Ellesmere Port Sports Village.

The club will stage the second round fixture on Saturday, July 6, and the final round on Sunday, September 1, and will face away fixtures at Connah’s Quay, Deeside, on Saturday, May 4, and at Longford Park Stadium, Trafford, on Sunday, August 4. 

FIXTURES this weekend include the Deeside AAC Open Track and Field Meeting at Deeside Stadium, Connah’s Quay, on Sunday (11am start), and the Trafford AC Open Meeting also on Sunday (12 noon start). The Greater Manchester Marathon also takes place on Sunday.

  1. 4th Round Northern League. Spoke to a York official at Leeds 3 weeks ago. Wakefield AC are
    In dispute with local council who manage the track and its Yorks understanding that ALL meetings at Wakefield track have been moved.
    Needs checking with League Sec nearer the meet date.
