Press report: Sion Leads WCAC Home Again

SION ROBERTS continued his rich vein of form at Birkenhead Park.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club youngster, who will represent Cheshire at Loughborough this Saturday in the UK Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships, was the first under 20 finisher and first home for his club at the fifth round of the Borders Road Running League, clocking 30 minutes 16 seconds for the 5.5 miles course.

He was backed up by Graham Wells (45th in 31:46), Steve Fernyhough (54th in 32:16), Mark Davies (58th in 32:36), Jac Goodall (59th in 32:40), Harvey Tegg (64th in 32:50), Richard Hayes (71st in 33:07), Andrew Clague (81st in 33:48), Paul Morrison (86th in 33:56), and final team counter Ian Gloyne-Phillips (87th in 33:56).

Other members of the men’s squad included John Parlevliet (34:09), Alex Staniforth (34:12), Curtis Rodway (34:20), Tony Woodall (34:54), Andy Carter (35:57), Dave Irving (36:05), Joe Foy (37:26), Adam Poole (38:55), Darren Shillington (41:32), Dave Tiernan (42:16), Mark Gallagher (42:16), and Mark Duffey (52:36).

Debra Bemand (42:04), Clare Mallon (42:35), Brygida Gorecka (44:17), Chloe Fitzpatrick (44:45), Kay Hayes (45:49), and Alex Duffey (47:50) combined for West Cheshire AC’s women’s squad.

ANNA BIRKETT-EVANS, Harvey Brown, Ruby McIlveen, Thomas Rimmer, Ruby Phillips, Ben Hackett, Cerys Rowlands, Benjamin Williams, Jessica Lark, Thomas Wilde, Georgina Duffey, and Elliott Bujac celebrated success at the final round of the Essar West Cheshire AC Schools Cross Country Race Series held at Ellesmere Port Sports Village.

Birkett-Evans (The Firs) clocked 3:27 for victory in the year three girls race, just two seconds clear of overall series winner Maya Jennings (Belgrave), and third-placed Ava Aiston (Waverton).

Brown (Tarporley) posted 3:09 for success in the year three boys race, two seconds ahead of runner-up James Haslam (Newton) who won the overall race series, and third-placed Dylan Chandler (Christleton).

McIlveen (Bishop Wilson) won the year four girls overall title after winning the final race of the series in 3:04, eight seconds clear of runner-up Mae Grant (St Oswalds) and third placed Sophie Taylor (Kings).

Rimmer (Overleigh St Marys) won the overall year four boys title after winning the final race in 2:42, ahead of runner-up Hugo McLintock (Mill View) and Jonathan Gordon (Newton) who was third.

Phillips (Sutton Green) secured the overall year five girls title after winning the final race in 4:39, ahead of runner-up Holly Coates (Kings) and third-placed Eleanor Neve (Mickle Trafford).

Hackett (Saughall All Saints) won the overall year five boys title after clocking 4:27 for success at the final round ahead of runner-up Tom Yates (Newton) and Ben Pold (Kings) in third spot.

Rowlands (Woodlands) delivered overall victory in the year six girls race after winning the final round in 4:44, ahead of runner-up Eleanor Williams (Kings) and Molly Brennan (Boughton Heath).

Williams (Willaston) secured the overall year six boys title after posting 4:24 for success in the final race ahead of Joseph Ireland (Mill View) and Jack Nash (Kings) respectively.

Lark (Upton) won the overall year seven girls title after winning the final round in 8:09, ahead of runner-up Aimee Phillips (Whitby) and Helen Tenner (The Grange) in third position.

Wilde (Christleton) secured the year seven boys title with a final round win in 7:34, ahead of runner-up Zak Ireland (Bishop Heber) and third placed Matthew Jones (Upton).

Duffey (Birkenhead Academy) registered the overall year eight girls title after clocking a winning time of 12:27 at the final round ahead of Queens duo Megan White (13:15) and Helena Lobato-Jones (13:32) who were second and third.

Bujac (Wirral Grammar) won the overall year eight boys title after posting 11:59 for success in the final round ahead of runner-up Nolan Heller (Abbey Gate).

FIXTURES this weekend include the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Prestwold Hall, Loughborough, on Saturday, the same day as the England Athletics Indoor Combined Events Championships in Sheffield, while the Chester 10k Road Race takes place on Sunday, the same day as the Liverpool Half Marathon, Trafford 10k, and Sale Harriers Indoor Open Meeting.
