Press report: Turley, Smith and Clarke Set New Marks

WEST CHESHIRE Athletic Club duo Laura Turley and Katie Clarke have both grabbed podium places. Turley delivered a silver medal performance while representing Chester University in the 400m at the British Universities and Colleges Indoor Athletics Championships in Sheffield.

Turley, who recently retained the Welsh Indoor 400m title in Cardiff and posted a new personal best of 54.67 seconds at the British Indoor Championships in Birmingham, led for most of the final in Sheffield and clocked 56.04 seconds having won her semi-final with a time of 56.27 seconds. Clarke secured a silver medal while representing Atlanta in the All American Collegiate Indoor Athletics Championships in North Carolina.

Clarke broke her club’s senior women’s 3,000m record after posting 10 minutes 20.77 seconds, behind college team mate Emily Kearney who won with a time of 10:04.93. Olivia Montez-Brown, of West Cheshire AC, clocked 8.72 seconds in the 60m hurdles and hit 11.13m in the shot put at Brooklands, for her American college, Augustana.

WEST CHESHIRE AC members representing Chester University in the BUCS Indoor Championships included Adam Poole who clocked a new 1500m personal best of 4:59.95, Jean Claude Randon (new 3,000m best of 9:51.36), HeatherMiller (new 60m best of 9.63), Rhianna Cook (new 60m best of 9.38), Joseph Morrison (1:59.10), and Bradley Spurdens (2:03.44) who rounded the 800m.

ETHAN ACKROYD, of West Cheshire AC, finished 15th in the senior boys race at the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships with 21:20 for the 5.8km course at Brecon.

KEELY SMITH clocked a new over-35 ladies West Cheshire club record time of 1:29:47 at the Village Bakery Half Marathon at Wrexham. Smith was joined at the event by club mates Steve Fernyhough (1:20), Chris Palmer (1:22:41), Tom Cable (new personal best of 1:23:33), Tony Woodall (1:26:50), Richard Hayes (1:28:09), Joe Foy (1:32:10), Rob Boggild (1:32:43), Andy Carter (1:34:40), and Anthony Spruce (1:35:28).

ELLIE ROBINSON (third over-45 lady in 55:55), Kerry Riley (third under-35 lady in 56:02), and Joy Hickman (fifth over 50 lady in 66:42) combined to earn West Cheshire AC third ladies team at the 6.75 miles Parbold Hill Race, supported by team mates Kay Hayes (10th over 35 lady in 69:42), and Luke Ellis (54:30).

STEVE FERNYHOUGH posted a new personal best of 18:18 as first finisher in the Chester 5k parkrun, ahead of West Cheshire club mates Andrew Clague (third in 19:05), Andy Carter (sixth in 19:49), Neil Carter (25:11), Michael Dennis (26:26), Barry Thomas (26:37), Brian Beattie (28:06), Tony Woodall (28:50), Julian Tegg (32:36), and Mark Gallagher. Paul Morrison posted 19:35 for fourth spot at the Ellesmere Port parkrun, ahead of West Cheshire team mate Lucia Pyne (25:47), while Megan White clocked a new personal best of 25:43 at the Delamere 5k parkrun.

FIXTURES this weekend include English Cross Country Championships at Harewood House, Leeds, on Saturday (11am start), and the England Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships at Sheffield on Sunday (12noon start).
