Press Report: Quartet Shine in National Champs

by Dennis Wall

HARRIET WHEELER secured a silver medal in Birmingham on Saturday.

The West Cheshire Athletic Club member braved difficult wet conditions during the England Athletics Under 20 Women’s Javelin Championship and nailed a throw of 45.33m to claim second position.

Harriet was in fourth position before her last throw during an exciting competition at the Alexander Stadium, but moved into first position with throw of 45.33m before being bumped into second place by a throw of 46.06 from the last athlete to throw.

Club mate, Kara Stoll, kicked things off in the Women’s hammer on Friday, finishing 10th.

Holly Bosworth put in a very confident and aggressive 400m performance, leading strongly through the first 300m, but she unfortunately paid the price in the final 80m after going out too fast and just missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals.

However, Holly bounced back brilliantly in the 200m, executing her race plan smartly, qualifying for the semi-finals after finishing second in the heats, and running a strong 24.85 seconds in the semis, narrowly missing the final, finishing 10th overall, which is a fantastic effort.

Nathan Brassington took part in the combined events competition and registered a club under 20 record in the combined events.

He achieved personal bests in three events, including the 100m, 110m hurdles and pole vault and, finally broke the 6000-point mark overall which is a major milestone and he finished ninth.

REMOVING 1M RUNNING SHOES FROM LANDFILL

There are in the region of 18 billion pairs of running shoes sold in the world every year. That’s the equivalent to 2 pairs of running shoes per person on earth. Yet, there are millions who have no shoes and suffer terribly from sole diseases. ‘Jog on Again’ believe some 30+ million pairs of shoes end up in landfill every year and many of these shoes have a lot of life left in them!

The Club would like to do our bit and help ‘Jog on Again’ get those shoes out to those who need them in over 15 destinations around the world.

So, look in that cupboard, garage, under the bed. They may be old to you, but you can give them another chance with someone else.

There will be a collection box at the track for you to donate old trainers or spikes – no need to clean them up, we’ll take them just as they are!  Of course if anyone in the club feels they could make use of shoes someone else has donated, then feel free to help yourself from the collection box – you are still doing your bit to help save them from landfill. Thank you for your support.

TRACK SPIKES FOR SALE

Members wanting track spikes for their shoes can purchase packets of 12 for £2 from the Club Container Office at Club Training Sessions.
