This accurately-measured 5-mile road race, first held in 1993, starts and finishes at the Cheshire County Sports Club playing fields. It follows gently undulating country lanes, and is generally downhill for the first 2 miles, before a short climb at halfway. Most of the last mile back to the finish on the playing fields is flat. Prior to slight amendments to the course in 2012, Peter Riley set the course record and fastest time in the UK for 2006, at 23:23.

This race began as a 6-miler in 1982, becoming a 10k in 1993. It starts on Belle Vue Lane with a 3.3k lap, followed by a longer lap which repeats the first 2k, heading out along lanes on an accurately-measured course around Guilden Sutton to finish at the village hall.

Chester Round the Walls

Tuesday December 26th 2023

Facebook page is here.

The Chester Round the Walls multi-terrain race is one of the oldest races in the UK, being an almost permanent Boxing Day fixture since its inception in 1972. Although changing almost every year due to weather and ongoing maintenance of the roman and medieval walls, the typical route is around 6.8km/ 4.25 miles, starting and finishing on the Roodee racecourse and including sections of the walls including the famed Eastgate clock.

There is no longer a junior/ family fun run, just the main race.

We also provide marshalling assistance for the Chester Half-marathon.

Other road events
Our road runners compete all year round, in the Borders League and Cheshire Grand Prix road race series, as well as in road relays and many open races. You can find these on the Fixtures page.

Age Group records
See the Records page for individual records across all ages, on road, track and field. Please note: “Senior” records on the Records page denote overall age 21+ adult records including veterans, rather than just the 21-35 year Senior age band referred to in the attachments on this page.
