This race began as a 6-miler in 1982, becoming a 10k in 1993. It starts on Belle Vue Lane with a 3.3k lap, followed by a longer lap which repeats the first 2k, heading out along lanes on an accurately-measured course around Guilden Sutton to finish at the village hall.

There is no longer a junior/ family fun run, just the main race.
The Essar Chester Round the Walls multi-terrain race is one of the oldest races in the UK, being an almost permanent Boxing Day fixture since its inception in 1972. Although changing almost every year due to weather and ongoing maintenance of the roman and medieval walls, the typical route is around 6.8km/ 4.25 miles, starting and finishing on the Roodee racecourse and including sections of the walls including the iconic Eastgate clock.

This accurately-measured 5-mile road race, first held in 1993, starts and finishes at the Cheshire County Sports Club playing fields. It follows gently undulating country lanes, and is generally downhill for the first 2 miles, before a short climb at halfway. Most of the last mile back to the finish on the playing fields is flat. Prior to slight amendments to the course in 2012, Peter Riley set the course record and fastest time in the UK for 2006, at 23:23.

We also provide marshalling assistance for the Chester Half-marathon.

Other road events
Our road runners compete all year round, in the Borders League and Cheshire Grand Prix road race series, as well as in road relays and many open races. You can find these on the Fixtures page.

Endurance League
Since 2008,  we’ve organised an annual endurance league competition for West Cheshire AC’s senior and veteran runners, based on gaining points for participation in road, cross-country, multi-terrain and fell races over the calendar year, with an emphasis on club events. See here for an explanation of the league, and see near the foot of our archive page for previous years’ standings.

Women’s and men’s endurance league tables as at the end of September 2019 are now available, based on a list of races in which points were gained between January and June, and since July. Compare them to the same women’s and men’s tables at the end of August, to see where you have gained points this month.

Let us know if you think that there are any errors by clicking “Contact” at the top of this page and selecting “Webmaster” under “What does your query relate to?”.

Women’s and men’s endurance league tables for 2018 are also available, as is a list of races in which points were gained between January and June 2018, and between July and December 2018.

See here for league organiser John Driscoll’s explanation of how points are gained, as well as a comparison of numbers taking part now versus 2014, and an explanation of how the handicap system works, featuring our 2018 league winners Angela Tegg and Andy Carter.

Age Group records
See the Records page for individual records across all ages (please note: “Senior” records on the Records page denote overall age 21+ adult records including veterans, rather than just the 21-35 year Senior age band referred to in the attachments on this page).

Click on the links for up-to-date progressions of age group road records for female and male club members since the club was formed, based on the results of these races.
